Peking Duck

I'd like to take my BF out for peking duck as a birthday dinner next month. So far I've found one place that's supposed to be the best in Effretikon, ZH but it's CHF120 per person. Is that reasonable? To me that's quite high but I only have Chicago Chinatown prices to compare that to. Anyone have any suggestions in the Zuri / Winti / Uster / Dietlikon, etc. areas?

Thanks!

Re: Peking Duck

In Zen, is it 90 CHF for the duck, for 2 person or more?

I am not sure but a quick call to 043 - 377 06 18 will resolve your query.

Re: Peking Duck

I recall that Beyond had a Peking duck on their menu (to be ordered 3 days in advance), although it does not seem to be listed on their website's menu.

Re: Peking Duck

Try the Ente house in Baden (or just on the outskirts in Nussbaumen)
Well nice, but a little pricey. Friendly owners, speak English - I think you must order 24 hours in advance - maybe you can ask for a discount
http://www.entehuus.ch/default1.htm
Ps Ente is German for duck and it is their speciality - and they do it very nice - in 3 courses - crispy skin, normal duck in steamed rolls with cucumber plum sauce and a soup made out of the remaining bones. Something special

Re: Peking Duck

I've tried the Peking duck at Entehuus on Alfred-Escher-Str and I wouldn't recommend it. Actually, I had heard such great things about this restaurant from so many people but I was disappointed on so many levels. I felt it was a below average Chinese restaurant. Maybe I was there on a bad night, but I won't be returning there.

Beyond and Suan Long at Bahnhof Enge remain my favourites.

Zen Restaurant is also very good, just a bit pricey. I haven't tried the Peking duck there, though, but would be interested to hear how others have found it.

Re: Peking Duck

I still can't believe the duck pancake starter can be so pricey. That is outrageous. I am new to CH, so can people confirm that for the starter only it amounts to over 100 francs ... for duck ?????

I'd say better to prepare it at home. Spend that money on something more worthwhile.

Re: Peking Duck

The Suan Long in Kloten used to have it as a main course for CHF 34.- - Two can share it as a starter.
They have renovated the restaurant and changed the menu to include Thai dishes so I am not sure if the Peking Duck is still on the menu. Was excellent.
Their number is 044 803 0808

Re: Peking Duck

Nagasui on Selnaustrasse in Zurich has a decent Peking Duck.

Check under 'Restaurant' and 'Chinesische Gerichte' for 'Beijing Ya' (CHF35). It's served with julienned vegs and a kind of wrap on the side.

http://www.nagasui.ch/

Apparently, the chef is from Shanghai and the owner is Chinese-Malaysian.

Swiss prices are crazy in 'oriental' restaurants, but good duck is expensive wherever you eat it. It needs special prep and if you can do a real crispy one at home with a non-frozen, hung duck (which alone costs too much here IMO), then can make the various complimentary duck dishes as well, please invite me

Here's crispy heaven pr0n, lovingly gobbled a few weeks back, though sadly not in Switzerland:

Re: Peking Duck

We went out last night and had Peking Duck which was a bit different as it was apparently the Swiss way:

Which is a first course of the pancake wraps, the 2 ducks legs and the skin with fat removed on a bed of crackers.

The second course was two dishes of the remaining duck done in different sauses.

You should have seen our faces when we were looking for the shredded duck under the crackers ;-)

Talking to the head waiter they can do it tradional style where you have the shredded duck with the pancake wraps, in fact they think that is the only way to have it. He admitted the Swiss style he found was strange but then this seems to be how the demand is in Geneva.

I went to Beyond for Peking Duck a short time ago.

I ordered it in advance and it was ~CHF80 for a whole duck (to be shared usually by two people).

They do it the proper way- with the pancakes, cucumber and sauce.

It was delicious and actually more food then the two of us could handle- we took leftovers home.

Overall nice casual intimate atmosphere. Would recommend.
