| | | Celiac/Coeliac, gluten free dining
Hi,
I have friends and family visiting over the next couple of months and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for eating out for Celiacs. I know we can eat fondue with Gschwelti (small boiled potatoes), Roesti, most sausages and raclette with potatoes, but I was wondering if people had names of restaurants or cafes they've seen gluten free options on the menu.
I thought I would start a list here with ratings to help others too. I'm going to try the Hitl at some point so I'll let you know how that goes. I'm particularly looking for places around the Baden area and Zurich but further a field would be good for day trips. I would love to find a gluten free pizza . So many restaurants, take aways did them in NZ but I haven't found any in Europe
Any suggestions would be great

In Zurich: Tibits in Seefeld has a veggie salady buffet with allergens clearly listed on the labels, and the Spaghetti Factory in the Niederdorf will do gluten free pasta with 30 minutes' notice.
There are also some tips on g-free eating out here.

The link provided by DB is great. I'd suggest you'd look through it.
For restaurants that cater to celiacs in the Baden area, I can make a few suggestions: - Rebstock: Unterhalde 21 (close to the old wooden bridge)- the waiter knew exactly what gluten was, and the chef modified the dish so I could eat it.
- Da Franco: Badstrasse 20 - in this case, the waitress didn't know about gluten, but she called the chef so we could talk and the meal was fine. The outdoor seating in the back is great!
- The Hirschli has a nice lunch menu, often with meat/fish/vegetable options which are fine for celiacs.
- There is also the Santa Lucia restaurant in Wettingen that apparently has gluten-free options marked on their menu. I've been told their regular pizzas are good, but I don't know if they offer a gf crust.

I have to add one more thing to the list (if you don't know this already): most of the Luxemburgerli at Sprungli in Zurich are gluten-free!
It's a great treat to have when you're in the mood for something sweet |

Hmmm.... maybe it's a bit late for you with your friends but I recommend da Bucolo ( http://www.dabucolo.ch/) in Bern for GF pizza. You just need to make a reservation the day before and tell them how many GF pizzas you will need so they can prepare the dough.

I'm sure this is too late for your current visitors but my experience is if you give a restuarant advance warning you'll have no problems. In our local pizza restaurant I can bring my own dough and flour I pay standard price but at least I ca eat Pizza with the family.
Nevertheless I'm careful which restaurants I choose I tend to choose "swiss" restaurants rather than chinese/mexican etc. Thai and curry are usually ok as the former doesn't use soy sauce and indian uses chick pea flour rather than wheat flour. One word of warning, if you ring up in advance and ask and the waitress seems confused then go for another restaurant. Also watch out for Arrowmat some chefs will use it not realising it isn't gluten free.
Good luck

| | | Restaurant serving Gluten Free Pizza in Zürich
Dear all -
I am looking for some restaurants in Zürich that serve gluten free pizza? I know I can make my own and have bought some flour at the reformhaus but was looking for a place to go when I need a quick fix.
From looking around (and using my very limited German)
I see that this company: http://www.bindella.ch/restaurants/u...restaurant_id=
has places that serve gluten free pasta but does anyone know if they do pizza (for example the santa lucia restaurant)?
Thanks for any help!

Google directed me here!
Question back...is gluten-free pizza actually worth eating? Gluten is normally pretty important for a decent yeast dough. For pizza where you really need a stretchy dough I'd have thought it was pretty well essential

To the OP:
The frozen DS one available at Co-op is not bad if you add fresh mozzarella and other things.
It only takes a few minutes in the oven so is probably quicker than going to a restaurant. |

Thanks for posting that picture, I have been looking at the big Coops and Migros for a frozen pizza but have not been able to find any. (Do you by any chance know which ones in Zurich carry it? I usually go to the one at Central?)
I don't crave so many things that contain gluten but sometime I really miss pizza and I have had some in the US and here that are pretty good.

The one in SihCity definitely has a wide range of gluten free stuff including gluten free pizzas, lasagnes and pastas

You can also order online... I'm not sure if the online shop has every single product in their gluten-free range but certainly a bigger selection than I've seen in any one Coop branch up to now. Will have to check out the one at SihlCity.

The smaller Co-ops only seem to sell the gluten-free beer |

I'm fairly sure that Egli in the Zurich Hautbahnhof rail city shopping centre sells pizza bases, they're not frozen, just packaged. I've also seen them in a couple of Reformhaus shops. The GF croissants from Migros own brand are pretty good if you ever get a sweet pastry craving like I do |

Thanks a ton Helen. I have frequented that Egli quite a bit...not sure how I missed the pizza crust!
I just bought the croissants from Migros to try the other day. Glad to hear they are good |

migros brunau park has gluten free pasta, ciabattas, bread, crackers and baguettes. as far as i know they don't do frozen food like the co-op "free from" range.
my strong advice (my daughter is a coeliac) is to cook and freeze food yourself.
the gluten free stuff you buy from shops is horribly overpriced and a rip off.

Tom,
Thanks a ton. I found the pizza at the Oerlikon coop - they have bread and cereal which I knew but they also carry the frozen stuff! The pizza was pretty good with some added toppings and it definitely satisfied my craving!
