you can also go with tram number 11.

Re: Indian Restaurant in Basel

Anyone been to Bombay Palace recently? I've got friends coming to Basel this weekend and I want to take them out for curry.

Does anyone have any better suggestions?

I like Mandir, but I thought I would try something new.

Cheers

Re: Indian Restaurant in Basel

I went there a couple of weeks ago for lunch and had the buffet (not sure if they do anything else at lunch times). It was rubbish.

All the Indian food I've had in Basel has been bad, apart from Mandir. They at least try to produce curries that are distinct from each other and have the right level of spices and chilli.

As an Indian, that place is just not worth it for me! Toned-down spices, at least half an hour before they bring you the first morsels...

The best Indian food I had in the region is "Indien Palace" in Lörrach, 15 mins by car from Basel.

There is a Curry take-away in the new Stücki shopping center. Haven't tried it, but it smelled great the day we were there
Has anyone been here recently(Indien Palace) ? All google hits to the site seem to have elapsed.

Looked at the Ghandi in Lörach and the menu looks like the usual Sri Lanken crap. (Note - avoid any south Indian notations on the menu)

Just looking for a seriously cheap and spicy curry with some nice chapattis - I.E. not Switzerland.

Was in Rheinfelden last night at the Gross Mäuer Chinese - OK, Cheap (37 Euros for 2 including crispy duck and mega starters) and am looking for a similar Indian experience. Not Sri Lanken, more Pakistani or Bangladeshi style.
The Indien palace (with an E) seemed what i was after.

Re: Indian Restaurant in Basel

In September we were staying in an apartment in St. Johanns, and kept walking by a simple but cosy Indian Restaurant-Cafe on Elsaesserstrasse 6 (around there). Finally we took a chance and it turned out to be wonderful. Since then we have been back two more times. There is no menu, just speak with the nice lady and she will recommend whatever is good for the day. Reasonable prices, highly recommended for those open for a spontaneous meal.

Fully agree - this is one of my favourites too, and fairly cheap.

Mandir in Spalentor is an easy one to recommend, I've never had a bad curry there.

Agreed and the owner knows the best whiskies to have after a good curry, tho Jay's is nice as well. Bajwa Palace is good if it is quiet, otherwise they forget what you ordered . The bombay palace, frankly, has the atmosphere of an airport terminal during a pilot strike. The food is not bad if they are quiet

Re: Indian Restaurant in Basel

after trying several places, my opinion is follows:

Mandir and Tandoori palace have good quality food but are bit pricey. Although ordering take-away from Mandir makes it more reasonable; the food is good though. In Tandoori Palace (near university place) buffet dinner was just okey, ordering from menu was much better.

Yesterday went to a small take-away called Krishna, it is on tram stop Mulhousestrasse for tram 11 (going to Saint Louis Grenze). The food was good, and a lunch with drink cost me 15 SFR. Since it has a home-like environment, so I was even able to ask for a refill

King's Kurry has recently moved from the 1st Floor of Stücki Areal to the Ground Floor (immediately on the Left as you go in through the main entrance)

Should have put this up when I moved here in October but this place has closed. Or moved? Either way it's not there any more so scratch this from the list.
if it was the place that was opposite the school then forgot about it!

Me and the wife tried a few but we are pretty disappointed overall at where we have tried that we have given up at the moment.

Been to jays Which is ok but too modern for us. Bajawa well we don't talk about that but if 1970 madras curry rocks your world then you will like here but we found it pretty plot. From what's I read about Bombay palace we veto'ed it.
We thought mandir is ok but nothing special and it was very expensive for what we got. I don't think I have been to tandoor palace

Re: Indian Restaurant in Basel

Ok so as you know I don't think much of indian food in basel. BUT I have found something nice for you readers to try.

Last year just about November there was a guy at marketplatz with a a stall selling indian sauces imported from the UK.

The company was in the uk was "the curry sauce company"
here is a website link, and a couple of pics for some reason the handler keeps rotating the pic! but you get the idea.
http://www.currysauce.com/

well he's back! he says he comes to Basel on Mondays only at marketplatz so get down there at lunch time! the guy is based in Sissach. This week i bought the dopiaza. the sauce has a taste reminiscent of Indian takeaways. Not like pataks pastes!

it was nice but that comes down to the cook of course!!
but how hard is it to cut up some chicken/beef peppers onions.

He even sold the naan bread! all in all, it tastes better to me than restaurant curry! but then I do have a rice cooker so that is half the battle to make the best of the sauce.

I know this should be in the food and drink but considering our poor choice I thought I should share with you guys here.

his prices are 9Fr a tub which i guess is dear! or 3 for 27fr but given our selection of restaurants and cost in basel I would recommend it.
maybe some of us EF members should do a curry night we each bring a flavour and share with wine and beer. Just a thought!

At the end I asked if he was going to zurich he says he is negotiating a slot for zurich market on a Wednesday should any zurich folk be checking on this thread.

I should state I don't know the guy personally or even have anything to do with his business. I also took some details should you be interested.
