I think it's the theme of the pub...
Sorry, old chap, but the words 'theme' and 'pub' don't even belong in the same sentence, let alone located next to each other.

Hi all,

Apropos to the discussion of music at McGee's in this thread: there is a new open mic (not that new--started in January, I think) every other Sunday night. The next one is tonight, 11 September, at 7:30. I am hosting it now after Jack, the founder, moved away. We welcome all types of music so come and play your stuff if you would like. There is a great, warm, supportive, exciting vibe at these open mics. All info here:

Was good fun last night, cheers for that Ryan. 'A cappella gangster rap' is the future.

We did an XXA beer tasting there one night for the Bier Factory (Rapperswil). Nice crew and the owner is a good guy.

Tell them you want them to order good beer (Rappigold). They don't really understand that people like beers other than boring big brand stuff.

Thanks, StirB. I'm glad you all made it. It was fun having a 'new' group there (new for me). Hope to see you there when I return in October and hope you make the next open mic with Thomas/Tory on 25 September.

I'll work on my 'Dumb Girl' (Run DMC) a cappella for next time...

But I know that Maiers www.maiers.ch has a session on monthly. We went one time (and would go more often except we keep forgetting when it's on; we were used to weekly sessions!) and it was good, friendly people. If you know anywhere we could go and play, my husband and I would both be keen (we're both fiddle players, though I play flute/bodhran sometimes too).
I'm one of the regulars at MAIERs. The management there has changed yet again, and they just informed us that they will discontinue the session by the end of the year.

Where to go for playing tunes in and around Zurich? The place would seem big enough so ppl don't wouldn't have to commute to Schaffhausen, Schwyz or Steffisburg to find a good session. Maybe it's time for something new. (How about a Comhaltas branch?) If anyone hears/knows/does anything in that direction, I'd be very interested.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

Without wanting to hijack the thread, why not consider posting such events on the calendar? If there are not enough people turning up but demand is there, maybe we need more publicity? (When is the next Maiers spot?)

It sounds like the cancellation is a done deal. But FWIW, the next (and last) dates are: Wed Nov 2nd, and Wed Dec 7th, 8:30pm until 11pm. I'll make sure to add them to the calendar as well. Maybe there will be a huge turnout and management sees the error of their ways?

I don't seem to have the permissions to add events to the calendar, maybe one of the forum deities can do it with their magic touch if they read along. Either way, come join us for the "parting glass" sessions at MAIERs.

Re: New Irish Pub "Mcgees", Zurich Wiedikon

@segv: You are very welcome to come play your tunes at McGee's open mic this Sunday, 23 October at 7:30 pm. More and more musicians are showing up each week and it is a lot of fun. We have all styles and levels, so anything you want to play will be appreciated. 'Tis a very friendly crew. Please come and enjoy. We meet every other Sunday night.

@Uncle Max: I'll try to add this to the calendar. Thank you.
(Edit: I see Chris already put it there...and you were speaking of the Maier's event.)

Just emailed Paddy Reilly's in town to see if they'd be interested in us setting up a small session there.... will let you know what happens!
Any word on setting up a small Irish session anywhere? One of my New Year's resolutions is to get out there and play more music!
