New Irish Pub "Mcgees", Zurich Wiedikon

Has anyone been to the new Irish pub which has recently opened up opposite Bahnhof Wiedikon. How was it?

Birmensdorfstr 83, 8003 Zurich

I havn't yet been myself but am thinking of paying a visit in the very near future. I hear that they are running a Monday night pub quiz, perhaps trying to take on the near legendary shamrock pub quiz in Wollishofen?

If anyone has any comments in regards to their experiences of this pub, I'd be all ears to hear about them

I was under the impression that the quiz is on Thursdays?

5 CHF per person to enter and the winning team takes it all. Serious business

Why can't you go ? Are you the owner?
Anyhow following the OP I went there on Saturday to check it out after helping a friend move apartment nearby in the morning/early afternoon.

It was dead on Saturday afternoon. One pair of girls came in and that was about it.
I am quite a good blagger and so we got our first two drinks free as new customers.
The Indian owner couldn't have been nicer. Very friendly. He told us about how busy it'd been the previous night with live (Irish) music.
Whisky tasting every Wednesday. A guy who has 100 varieties of whisky from round the world brings 6 whiskies and you can sample all 6 for 30chf.
It says Thursday night is Folk Music night on the website, But this week Thursday is quiz night. 5chf per team, winner takes all.
I think the owner said he was going to make it regular. And move music to Fridays.
(Thursday night is also quiz night at the Twist I believe.)

Anyhow, I asked if they did food. No.
Crisps? No, but we got free spicy popcorn in a bowl. I think the owner was going to be getting crisps in shortly,

Just visited the new website and it says they do do food so I think the pub is a work in progress.

My cider didn't taste fantastic, so I decided to try Carlsberg. Both my friends' Carlsbergs had bits floating in their first two pints, so I had Stella which was nice & clear. I guess the bar is new so the Carlsberg may improve once the pipes are a bit older.

One good thing about it is that it's directly opposite Bahnhof Wiedikon, Midweek it will open till midnight or one, or when the last person leaves.
Friday Saturday open till 4am which will be useful for any late night drinkers to catch the night train.

We asked for them to put on Aston Villa Wolves and they were more than happy to oblige. We asked them to leave the music on which was mainly pop.

It seemed to lack a bit of atmosphere (but hey it was Saturday mid afternoon) and it's not close to any other bars I know (nut I'm not familiar with that area).

I felt sorry for the owner he's trying to get attract people and is keen to get more events going to draw people in and has just launched a web site.
Could organise a Weekend Drinks there, and bring the atmosphere to the place provided the Carlsberg is fixed???

Hope this helps,
Hiccy Baby

You don't have to thank someone in writing darling, that's what the "Thanks" botton is for.
Go on, click it, you know you want to.
I only popped in there as it was near to my friend's old apartment where we did the move. He said he'd buy us lunch as a thank you. Should've cased the joint first, he got off lightly.

It's a 30 second walk from Bahnof Wiedikon, if you're passing that way. also has a very high ceiling so it may not get too smoky.

Re: New Irish Pub "Mcgees"

I've been in there a couple of times with friends who live nearby. Barstaff were very friendly. Sorry HiggyB, you might not be quite the negoatiator you suggest, we got a free round and none of us have bartering skills!! Gopi is clearly making an effort to make the place welcoming and best of luck to him, i'm certainly not averse to popping in there for a beer or two. They have a food menu in there now also.

Will see you in there for the quiz!

I think we're not far from the Zurich smoking ban though, right?

I heard that date is in doubt now. Initially when the October date for Zurich was postponed I thought 01/01/10 was the very last possible date but since heard that this is not 100% certain.
The Shamrock pub in Wollishofen has rented out two ceiling extractor fans until the ban, but the ceiling there is lower.
Fingers crossed for Jan 1st though.

Re: New Irish Pub "Mcgees"

I noticed this place at lunch the other day. It already seems to have it's day-drinker regulars so it is well on the way to becoming a typical irish pub. I saw a couple of posters up for live music and a Halloween party so they are making some sort of effort at least. Not sure about the "pub" feeling though.
The most sucessful Irish Pubs I have seen are all in cellars (This is a universal truth, think about it and you will realise it is so). This place has windows, and lots of them. Not sure if that is a good thing. I really don't need to know it is 30 degrees and sunny ourside which just makes me feel guilty when I am downing Kilkenny watching the cricket/footy/rugby/gaelic rules/whatever on a Summer afternoon...

Well I know many Irish are dubious about using French letters, but what is wrong with an Indian owner, pray tell?!

Wouldn't he be better off running an Indian bar.

Why would he be better of running an 'Indian' Bar? Is owning an Irish pub a birth right? I find this comment quite disturbing.

A Pub / Bar is a business. I'm a Hotelier and eventhough I'm not French, I'm trained to run French restaurants and have done so very successfully.

Just as a Bengali can cook Indian, or a Greek does a good Fish & Chips, an Indian can run a pub.

In my opinion the whole idea of an Irish bar is not about cooking a certain type of food or anything. It is about providing a feeling of Irish hospitality. I'm sorry but Irish people do Irish hospitality the best. I have no problem with him owning a pub, I do have a problem with him using a country which he appears to have no connection to which happens to be my home country as a means to making a quick buck.

I've been to Irish bars which were owned by non Irish and they tend to be perfect plastic paddies hang outs. The best Irish bars in my opinion are ones that are actually run by people who are Irish.

I know I'll get groaned for this, but its my opinion and I'm entitled to it.
