Indian food in Lausanne area [Restaurants]

We cannot find a decent Indian place in Lausanne - preferably with takeaway as we have a young baby. Can anyone help with suggestions? For thosein Lausanne, we are in Pully if that helps.

Cheers
Rod

Hi, there is the Chandigarh Tandoori in Morges, not the greatest Indian food I have ever had, but it's ok.

Errm, where is this one?

I know there is an Indian restaurant right next to the theatre at the Morges Est exit in the office complex there. Don't remember the name of that one.

There is also one called the Gandhi a little further down the road from the BMW dealership in the same area. The Gandhi is in a complex surrounded by blocks of apartments on both sides. The food here is tasty and the Mango lassies are nice. The only problem I had was they seemed to have trouble burning things. Don't get me wrong, I would rather eat here than a lot of the places I have eaten at. At least the ingredients were fresh and blending of the curries was well done. A lot of other restaurants seem to taste like the got their flavours out of a box or bag.

These are all I know of in Morges.

Anyone have anything to recommend in Lausanne?

Brian.

Re: Indian food in Lausanne area

I find the restaurants in Geneva to be a little better overall, and over the border in France n ear Cern, there's a lot of choice as well.

But back when I worked near Lausanne, we would go to the Kashmir at 25 Rue de la Paix in Rennens. They had a very large buffet at lunch time with a very good choice. Take away was also possible.

It's in the Beausobre Complex, you can also find it on the Morges website.

I've got the same question as the original poster. Anything in Lausanne proper?

Re: Indian food in Lausanne area

1.Kashmir in Renens
2.Taj Mahal in Chavannes-near Gloryland
3.One Indian restaurant is just next to the Valentine bus stop in Lausanne (can't recall its name-sone Indian Paradise or something like that).
4.Maharaja at Avenue de France,Chauderon (Lausanne-center).
5.Dhanye behind Lausanne Gare (he prepares as per customer's request too). He prepares only vegetarian meals.
6.There is a new Indian restaurant just 10 mts next to Valentin Medical Centre.

Re: Indian food in Lausanne area

I've had mostly good experiences at the Maharaja Take Away, which is very near to Pont Chauderon/Rue Des Terreaux.

A word to the wise, however: avoid anything that's been prepared as a daily special, as these dishes are mass produced and generally don't have much flavour. If you make sure you order something that they have to prepare, you can get some excellent food. The trick is to specify that you're interested in eating an English-style curry as opposed to Swiss style. The proprietor is Punjabi and speaks English, and I think he's always chuffed to have people in who will appreciate a truly good curry. He does sometimes grumble about the blandness of the typical Swiss palate. Their chutneys, raita and naan brads are all homemade as well. Yummy!

Review of Maharaja Re: Indian food in Lausanne area

I ate at the Maharaja on Avenue du France 2 in Lausanne this afternoon.
The place is a hole in the wall takeaway with half a dozen little tables.
They serve the plat du jour on metal thali trays. They even have an Etudient (SP?) special that drops the price down to less than 15chf, normal is around 20chf.

Food is pretty good, if not typical for Indian food. A little zippy not bland, but also not stunningly hot. Rice good. Mango Lassi good. Papadam good.
Not cheap but, not expensive (for swiss), for quick, Ok food.

Brian.

I know this if far but we had a great Indian take away from Divonne, just over the border from us, so if you happen to be near anytime, try it.

I have eaten at this restaurant too but forget the name. Rue du Valentin is right around the corner from Place de la Riponne-M. Bejart. Food is pretty good, not the best I've ever had, but I imagine pretty good for Lausanne. I'd go again.

I assume that the one you are referring to is the Délices Indiens, located at Rue du Valentin, 23.
It has a lunch buffet which I have tried as well.
I am not that impressed. It is not particularly cheap and the food is fairly bland. Neither is the ingredient quality exceptional.
I personally like the Maharaja near Place Chauderon on Ave de France, 2.
More hole in the wallish but better quality. IMHO.

Has anyone eaten in the Indian that just between Pully and Lausanne on Avenue du Leman? It's next to a bar called Pepe's I think and is closer to Lausanne than it is to Pully. I've walked past a few times, but not ventured in yet.

I think the one he referred is the Indian Paradise (I'm not sure about the name), which is a different one. If you keep going up Valentin from the Délices Indiens its 5 minutes walking, it's difficult to see because its not on the street level, its a little upstair. Better food than Délices Indiens and extremely good service!

Well, then, I stand corrected. Which is nice as I was not aware of the the Indian Paradise as being distinct from Délices Indiens.

I will try it as soon as I can think of an excuse to go into Lausanne.

Re: Indian food in Lausanne area [Restaurants]

I went to Maharaja on Ave de France tonight and had the worst experience. I know this an old thread, but I wanted to leaved this info here, for others.

I went there with my husband, as we live nearby. We sat down and ordered our food. When it came out, it was quite good. Not great, but definitely better than cooking for myself after a long week at work. As I ate, I decided I was thirsty. I went to the counter and asked for water. The man working explained that they were "a caterer" and not "a restaurant" so they did not serve glasses of water. Okay, that was odd, but I was okay with it. But I was still really thirsty, so I pulled a bottle of water from my bag. (It's not that I didn't want to buy a beverage, it's that I don't really like bottled water, the waste of plastic and all). The man came back out from the kitchen and yelled "PUT THAT BACK IN YOUR BAG NOW". He was EXTREMELY rude. If he had asked politely, my thirsty self might have even been okay with it, but he was straight up rude. We almost got our food boxed up to eat at home, because it was such an unpleasant experience. In the end we ate it there and left.

I don't think I have ever written a bad review online before, but this was some of the worst service I have ever had.

Don't eat here if you like
1) Water with your meal
2) Polite service

I think you might find he does not have a license to serve customers, only to sell food. He probably just got a little excited, and worried about his license!

What items did you order?? I've walked by this place once or twice (when we first arrived in CH I took the wrong bus and got really lost one day.. Ha!
I'm excited to hear that they do take-away as we don't really have a babysitter for Lil Dude.
We may have to take a train trip to Lausanne to check out a few of the places listed as well!

Oh, I understand that the licensing might be strange, which is why I was polite when he first refused to give me water. I also would have been understanding if he had been remotely polite when he asked me to put away my water bottle. As it is he was INCREDIBLY rude. If he had said "SVP" or done any thing other than yell and order me to put it away, this post would not have happened.

Too bad, I really wanted to like it. It's so convenient for me!!
