The showing in Bern we are attending has subtitles only in German, whereas they would normally be in German and French.

Hate watching English movies in Switzerland, whenever the character starts to speak in a different language to English, they never display the subtitles in English!

Let us know if the film is any good. It is on at the local Imax in 3D too. I fancy another trip to the Imax, but not sure about going to see a kiddies film. It'll probably be full of brats.

She has Chocolat and Neverland, but what else could you recommend in a similar vein. Not sure if she would like Scissorhands, Willy Wonka or the PoTC movies, what about Sweeney Todd?

| | | Re: Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland | Quote: | | | | | Will she be into the Pirates of the Carribean? A box set of all 3 will be lovely. Alsow what about Sleepy Hollow, Benny and Joon, Whats Eating Gilbert Grape? | | | | | I second Benny and Joon and Whats Eating Gilbert Grape. Also what about The Corpse Bride (another Burton/Depp/HBC combo) and Secret Window?
Or you could always get her a box set of his 80s TV series 21 Jump Street. |

Tickets booked for Pathé Dietlikon.
IMO Tim Burton movies do have a habit of disappearing up their own backsides; there is so much surreal that you kind of lose any resemblance of a plot or local color that may have been present in the book and you just leave the theater wondering what just happened to that childhood story that you loved. Somewhere in between all the pastel backdrops, zany interpretations and computer animated orgasms there was a real story just waiting to be told. But hey, he gets the big bucks to make movies that put butts on seats....

(My son loves Sweeney Todd. I thought it was well done, but am content to have watched once.)
FWIW, I liked Depp in Secret Window and Donnie Brasco.

not sure how many people know but this movie is not a remake of Alice in Wonderland - rather set after Alice returns to Wonderland after being away for some time... | Quote: | | | | | Tickets booked for Pathé Dietlikon.

The premise of the film is Alice revisiting the characters she came across in the original stories.

I'm interested to see Burton's take on it. Although he does go a bit weak, and 'family-friendly' on such movies.
I think Gilliam should have done it, IMO he's the only director who could genuinely capture the darker and deeper aspects of the movie. Not afraid to offend or displease people for the sake of a successful movie.

| | | Re: Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland | Quote: | | | | | Tim Burton is over-rated. | | | | | He has become over-rated for sure. however I really enjoy his movies from the 80s and some from the 90s. the first batman was great, edw scissor hands was great, and you cant forget pee wees big adventure. he even had some interesting short films from earlier. but now its kind of just meehhhh. i havent really enjoyed anything of his for at least 10 years. somebody else hit it right on the head: the plots get weak while your excited about cool imagery, but maybe thats enough for you current burton fans. I do like danny elfman though. the score from nightmare before christmas is pretty awesome. oingo boingo wasnt too bad either.
in what way has he become over-rated? i would say in the "so many people, including most of the people on this thread, buying tickets and getting excited for his new movie, even though it will suck" kind of way.
