Very expensive, nice dry aged beef, but not quite up to par:

You think the steak is better at Eisenhof? I've eaten there many times and although I like the place and would certainly recommend it for an informal supper, the meat there really isn't in the same league as Goodman. For a start the Eisenhof only serves fillet, which is steak for people who don't really like steak.

I've only heard bad things about the Beef Club (both in terms of price and cooking).

Re: Goodman Steakhouse coming to Zürich

Here's another comparison:

Beef Club - 200g Swiss ribeye CHF49
Goodman - 400g USDA ribeye CHF69

http://www.palavrion.ch/index.php?id=245

So why berate Goodman for expense above the Beef Club?

In addition, Beef Club seems to cook their steak in their hausgemachter Gewürzmischung. Yikes!

Re: Goodman Steakhouse coming to Zürich

Eisenhof doesn't win you any points with formal diners- agreed - but it's a hit with anglo-saxons even when doing business. The Goodman's dry aged meat is better in terms of taste than the Eisenhof, but if you're into meat and don't want to spend the money - Eisenhof is the way to go. Wether you prefer steak over fillet I'll leave up to personal preference.

What did you hear about the Beef Club ? I'm curious to know.

BTW - I'm not a big fan of the Roli's Steakhouse in Oerlikon - any thoughts ?

They're both in the same price league, but Beef Club service matches the money they're asking for. Goodman will have to improve on that.

I'm loathe to try out Beef Club, just to compare. It just doesn't look inviting. I've heard a from a couple of people who thought the food was pretty bad there.

I'm less fussy about service but Goodman's been really good the couple of times I've been.

In terms of cost for the quality of food I actually thought Goodman was reasonable value for money (in Zürich terms).

I like meaty delights and I walk past Beef Club all the time when I eat at Movenpick on Dreikonigstrasse, but I've never been in. There is something like "businessman's steak" on the menu - unless they're serving sliced businessman, it's really not for me. The whole setup has the feel of a cheap knockoff of an austere gentleman's club.

I don't think this picture makes Beef Club look very appetising:

goodman-steakhouse-coming-z-rich-movenpick.jpg

It should be pinker inside and more caramelised on the outside.

The room itself is nowhere near as characterful or charming as their Mayfair outpost,
Funny you used the word outpost. That's the name of the restaurant next door to Zurich Zoo where I've had the best steak in Zurich.
www.zoo.ch/documents/OP_Speiskarte.pdf
The Canadian Black Angus Beff Tenderloin is mind blowing.
A bit of a trek to get to but worth it.

I get the bus 66 from the Brandschenkestrasse stop and while I was waiting there one evening I heard an English restaurant critic on his mobile saying that apart from a few minor niggles the whole meal, service and restaurant were top notch. That was a week after opening so hopefully it's improved on that since

Just an English guy on his mobile? Or an actual recognisable critic . . . if so, which one?

He was a restaurant reviewer/critic. He was reporting back to someone and answering questions solely about the place in a business, matter of fact way. He wasn't boasting back to his mate.
From the way he was talking objectively he could also possibly have been a mystery diner sent by the owner.

It sounds a bit strange for a visiting critic to go to that restaurant. I know a good handful of UK critics so I'll ask around.

Community Service Announcement: Beef Club? Uh, no.

I could go into the reasons (poor service, food, decor) but I don't even want to think about that place. You'll have to trust me.

Just to chip in, I had a ribe-eye at the Outpost restaurant next to Zurich Zoo yesterday afternoon and it was superb. Cooked perfectly and melted in the mouth. Steak is usually decent enough but rarely outstanding. This was memorable!

Re: Goodman Steakhouse coming to Zürich

As an aside, is there anywhere in Zürich that has Wagyu or Kobe beef? Goodman's don't appear to have it on their menu.

Has the OP tried making it at home? All you need is a cow and a crate of beer.

Cheers,

Re: Goodman Steakhouse coming to Zürich

Went back to Goodman last night for another go. Ribeye again, although they overcooked it this time. Waiter recommended medium - - we said rare to medium rare. They came almost medium. It wasn't so bad that we sent them back but, well, you can ruin good beef.

They've improved the service a bit, cocktails made properly this time and meat was brought out on a tray for an introduction (without asking this time) - but only six of the cuts made it out of the fridge and my feeling on this one is bring out a proper tray with all of the meat on it and don't make me ask to see the Porterhouse.

Aside from that, great bottle of Barbaresco, forgettable sides, and CHF170 a head before tip.

I'll go back, but last night I could have stayed at home and eaten as well or better.
