Re: A Swiss Wedding

Sticking to the wedding theme, can anyone recommend any bands/DJs that would be suitable for an wedding party in the evening? As is normal for such events, there'll be a wide range of ages to cater for so they should be fairly versatile. Any links or experiences from music at recently attended/held weddings would be very much appreciated. By the way, the wedding will take place in Canton Zug.

Re: A Swiss Wedding

I got married on Friday

My fiancé and I had been married before. We decided to keep costs down and opted only for a civil ceremony.

As my sweetheart speaks only Russian and passable English, we had to use the services of a translator who luckily is a close friend of ours and was supplied with a copy of the ceremony protocol three days beforehand.

After the ceremony, we went outside for photographs and then on to a local hotel where we had booked a room for eating and dancing.

It was a pretty low key affair but at the end of the day we (and our guests) thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The wedding is what you make it.

Re: A Swiss Wedding

Flashman, congratulations! A lovely picture of the two of you. I'm getting a little teary what with all this heartfelt stuff...

Cumulus, I'm not sure if you're well into your planning yet, but I can second Puddycat's Muri AG recommendation. We attended a wedding there a few years ago, and the couple basically skipped the church part in favor of having a "ceremony" there through the Zivilstandesbeamtin. What I mean is that the guests were already seated and the bride was ushered into the room by her dad, where the groom was waiting. The couple took a few of the ritual elements of a church ceremony and adapted them to the civil ceremony. The large room the other poster referred to is indeed beautiful and very very spacious. At the wedding I attended, the couple had an aperitif outside afterwards.

Re: A Swiss Wedding

I've been to receptions recently at Schloss Rapperswil and also at Hotel Giessbach (Brienzer See) both of which I can heartily recommend. The later also included a boat ride with a bell ringing ceremony by the captian. And they let me drive the boat!

Re: A Swiss Wedding

Hi puddycat, I have a couple of questions for you or anyone else out there:

1. do all of these documents have to be translated into German/Italian/French?
2. How do you get a certificate of no impediment?
3. How long in advance should you go to the Standesampt before the actual civic ceremony takes place? I.e. can I go in March if I want to have a ceremony during the summer? I would like to know where, when and if I have a reservation for the civil ceremony so I can invite friends long in advance. Thanks!!

Re: A Swiss Wedding

Heck, its your wedding, you make the rules!

It's even going to be more memorable for you if its exactly how you picture it, and it's your day (the couple). I would say this is the day where you get to be as selfish as possible as a couple, everyone else are just spectators there to share your moment.

Enjoy it! People will all have fun and appreciate the experience of just being there to see you two do your thing, they will enjoy it more if you are both relaxed and happy...the best way to assure that is make it how YOU want it....

Good luck and congrats!

1 - Yes, try your local Inlingua or Migros Klubschule, we had ours translated English to German at Inlingua, took three days & cost 200chf.

2 - Try your own consulate, you must provide relevant documenttion from your home stae, both my wife & I were divorcees (UK & CH), we both ad to present the relevant paperwork / divorce certificates.

3 - As soon as possible, best to get it out of the way & any problems cleared to keep stress to a minimal level. (experience speaking here ...)

Good luck & all the best.

1. Check with the Zivilstandesamt that you are planning on marrying at. Sometimes they will accept the English documents- here in Cham it was accepted and they were already in the computer since I have given birth/ divorced here. You might want to being them along so they can check if any documents need to be reordered/ apostille needed from your home country.

2. see Polorise's answer

3. ASAP. Our gemeinde is now accepting dates a year in advance. Saturdays are also limited (we lucked out and got the last time slot availible of the 1st Sat. that they are offering here) Depending on where the civil ceremony is held, space for guests could be limited.

Re: A Swiss Wedding

Lugano accepted English documents too. Other languages might vary.

My certificate of only having a speech impediment was from the Brit VCG. In English.

Seems it depends per location but English is usually accepted - pays to check though dunnit?

Re: A Swiss Wedding

Does anyone have a recommendation for a countryside wedding venue which also has a hotel (for 90 guests) onsite?
