Re: Giving birth in Neuchâtel

Hi there!
I will also be moving to Neuchâtel in the near future and my baby is due in September.
I would really appreciate it if you would share what you find out with me...
I also feel a bit scared and in the dark.

When will you be moving?
When is your due date?
Maybe we can help each other out!

Re: Giving birth in Neuchâtel

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend an English-speaking obstetrician in the Neuchâtel area. I will be arriving in May and giving birth in September. Any advice would be very much appreciated because I don't know where to begin.
Thanks so much!

She was reccommended to me by and South African friend and she speaks good English.

Heya,

I had major issues finding any ob/gyny in neuch who would take me on... The only one at the moment who accepts any patient (and only if they are pregnant) is Dr de Meuron +41 32 724 42 24. The others all have 6month to a year waiting lists! He speaks some English but we converse in French...

You could try up in la Chaux de fonds but personally I didn't want to go that far.

Please feel free to message me if you need help.

xx

Re: Giving birth in Neuchâtel

Hello, Epidural is used at Pourtales, confirmation from last week from a friend of us. We're been through two births there, both without problems, no need for Epidural. We've had an English mum friend here too, gave birth at Pourtalès and was happy there. The hospital is new, only about 6-7 years old. They don't speak much english but portugese might be handy, at least for the nurses.
As for the insurance, you'll have to confirm your choice as soon as possible after your arrival for yourself and pre-insurance for your baby too - before the birth, as somebody has noted.
Depending on your level of comfort, the price for the health insurance can vary quite a lot but you could basically get along with some 250chf/month for yourself. A site that summarizes it is www.comparis.ch. We chose Concordia, reasonable price for reasonable services and they have an office close to Neuchatel.
Don't let yourself rush into semi- or full private hospital care unless you need it.

Re: Giving birth in Neuchâtel

I know pain relief and the way you're treated are a side-topic of this thread but there's too much generalisation about what the Swiss Germans will and won't let you have, etc.

In deepest darkest Canton Congo, my midget appeared and mummy had an epidural. No gas and air. Choice.

Re: Giving birth in Neuchâtel

Hi All,

I recently moved to Neuchatel from Lausanne and will be switching doctors to have my baby in Neuchatel. I am due in December and am thinking of giving birth at Pourtales. Can anyone give me any advice or experiences that you might have pertaining to Pourtales and childbirth? Thanks a bunch, I am a little uneasy about giving birth in Switzerland as my first was born in the US and I don't speak French. So any help would be great.

Re: Giving birth in Neuchâtel

I know several people who have given birth there without speaking any French, they do have some midwives who speak English. I had two great experiences there but I spoke (bad) French. Another friend who spoke only English gave birth at klinik linde in biel, which is kind of a birth house but with real hospital surgical capability should you need it. It was really nice, she had her own room with a mini fridge! I know she set up tours there and of the different birth houses in neuchatel before making her decision and she did it all in English.

Re: Giving birth in Neuchâtel

My niece gave birth x2 at this place, she swears by it- but I have no idea about anyone speaking English there.

Thing is, even if you find a midwife who speaks English, she may be off duty or on hols, etc, when you time comes. I shall be around in December and before if anyone needs support.
