I'm due on 1st May with my second child but the first in Switzerland. We live near Morges so I initally said I would deliver there as it is close by and my Dr consults there.

After reading about it a bit more it seems that Morges aren't that capable of dealing with problems or emergencies and they will transfer you to CHUV if unfortunately you need some extra care? It concerns me a bit that I will need to be transferred if I end up with any complications so I was thinking of just transferring to CHUV anyway. Does anyone have any experience with giving birth in these Hospitals? Many thanks

I do understand your concern. I heard the same in regards to complications. Though I do not have experience in regards to giving birth in one of these hospitals, I have had a very good experience at the CHUV with my (then) 3 year old.
I would switch to the CHUV for a complicated pregnancy. They're quite brilliant and caring.

I can't comment on the CHUV as we haven't been there, but I had our son at Morges hospital last September. I went in to be induced in the end and then had to have an emergency c-section but the care at Morges was excellent. I don't know for what reasons you would need to be transferred to the CHUV, but the maternity unit there is certainly able to deal with emergency c-sections very quickly and efficiently. The docs and mid-wives looked after us really well and I don't think I could have asked for better care.

We went into the hospital about a month before my due date and met with a mid-wife there to talk through our birthing plan - if you have concerns maybe that would be worth organising to see for what reasons you may need to be transferred to the CHUV?

When talking about your Dr, you mean your gynecologist/obstetrician? He should be able to tell if your delivery should be complicated or not. Have you talked to him? What does he say?

Sometimes deliveries become complicated even when it was NOT expected. So if you choose Morges, just ask what procedures are in place in case a problem arises (very rare, but still better be safe).

You also have to be aware to Morges hospital is very popular for births. Thus the maternity ward can get a bit 'crowded' at times!

Victim of its success, every year a few mothers are turned down and sent to the CHUV simply because Morges is full and can't accommodate new arrivals at certain critical periods!

Thanks very much for the replies! Like someone said, emergencies arise even in perfect trouble free pregnancies so I have decided to move to CHUV just to be on the safe side.

Apparently they can perform emergency c/s but say if the baby has trouble breathing they can administer the 'first stage' of care at Morges but then the baby will be moved to CHUV. Just seems a little unnecessarily risky.

Also, I had a bad experience back in London with my Son due to an overcrowded Hospital so a bigger Hospital sounds better to me!

I'm due in May also, and am in the same situation - trying to decide on the venue. I did not know that Morges was so popular that one may get turned down, that's interesting to hear and something I will now take in to consideration. As this is my first I'm not sure that I'd cope well in such a situation! My Gyn/Op has suggested CHUV, naturally, as it is the main university hospital - but I still like the idea of a smaller more intimate atmosphere...and am also considering Vevey. Have any of you done tours of the ones mentioned?

I delivered in Morges last year and it was perfect! It is a small hospital and so you feel like home. My midwife spoke English and also the doctor. Book a tour and you should go with your first impression. I also have had the possibility to go to the CHUV but I never booked a tour because I liked Morges so much.

Just found this thread - am in a similar situation... my first baby, due early June. We live in Lausanne not far at all from CHUV, so that would be the obvious place, but have heard good reports from colleagues about Morges, so am a bit in two minds. Haven't yet been for a "tour" or look around either yet though, so would be keen to find out what other people's impressions/experiences are...

We were unable to visit the CHUV so opted for Morges and no regrets there at all. Have had friends deliver in CHUV and they've been happy with the care. I think the main drawback to Morges, is that if your baby needs special neonatal care then they would have to be transferred to CHUV. But for taking care of Mom I think Morges are well equipped.

Do you need basic french to giving birth in CHUV? My french is zero...does the doctor and midwife able to speak english? or do i need someone to become translator during the visit, tour and labour??

In my experience some of the docs/midwives at the CHUV do speak english but definitely not all of them. My french is OK though so mostly I was still speaking french with them and not finding out how much they would speak english if needed. I guess that would be the same wherever though. Overall I was really impressed with the care at the CHUV.

I recommend CHUV. I gave birth in may 2012 and it's a great hospital. My friend, who delivered a few weeks before me, was also very happy! So definitely CHUV!!
