English Playgroup in Biel/Bienne - starts 3rd Feb

There's a playgroup for native English speaking families with children aged 0-3yrs starting in Biel on the 3rd Feb. Every Thursday 1400-1600 in the FamiPlus building (FamiPlus Biel, Unterer Quai 1B, 2502 Biel/Bienne).

Re: English Playgroup in Biel/Bienne - starts 3rd Feb

May be moving to Biel area from New York with 16 mo old and one on the way. My husband needs to be near Biel for work, but from searching online, it seems there is a lot to do in Bern...wondering if we should look at housing options in Biel or midway between Biel and Bern...any thoughts for a stay-at-home-mom (this will be new to me, too...currently work part time) who doesn't speak French nor German and is concerned about feeling isolated etc? Thanks very much.

Re: English Playgroup in Biel/Bienne - starts 3rd Feb

Hi, I would say the single most important thing is to make sure that you have easy access to public transport. I'm not a great fan of living in a city, but knowing that my husband would need the car for work, we thought it the best option as I refused to be stuck in some village in the middle of nowhere with just 2 buses a day. I would also look around to see whether or not there's a playgroup you can get to easily as that's really been a life-saver for me. (We moved here the month before I was due and knew no-one here at all)

I think it also depends on whether you are planning to go look for a job yourself at some point. If you plan to be an eternal SAHM then you might as well find somewhere that's most convenient for your husband's work. Bern certainly has more things to do than Biel, but it is only half an hour away on the train although I do know half an hour on the train with an unhappy baby can seem like forever! If you're going to be looking for a job then (depends what you do really) being closer to Bern (or Basel) would probably be better for you. Also you'd have to think of being somewhere with easy access to a nursery etc. I personally quite like Biel, but then I'm not really a city person and had doubts about living somewhere this big. I like that it's quite small and easy to get about (on foot) to the station, lake, forest etc

Hi, I have been living in Biel for 16 months now From UK originally....

I live in Bellmund -which is a beautiful & lovely sub -village area of Biel . next to the beautiful town of Nidau... Port & Nidau ... is also somewhere really nice to live ...most of the shop keepers speak English, both villages have regular buses into Biel stopping at the Bahnof -train station & child freindly for pushchairs... a lovely vibe & ambience of Nidau :-)
Nidau ..has some super little coffee stops & lovely stores in a little town high street -a great community vibe here ..and a hop skip jump from Biel ..
another area inbetween Biel & Bern is Lyss ... literally straight of the autoban (moterway) nice town.. even a Mcdonalds ,-)) some nice stores & coffee shops ... and lovely area to live .. so a few places to check out!
I do not have children.. Am hoping in the very near future for this to happen with my Swiss Fiance. If you want to meet for a coffee & chat.. I'd be happy to show you the ropes of the transisition :-) My fiance has a immobilien business -Real Estate ..he may be able to help with renting a apartment in Biel or Bern area ...his English is outstanding!

Re: English Playgroup in Biel/Bienne - starts 3rd Feb

I will be moving to La Neuveville in May or June with my 3 year old son. Would love to take the train and come to your group as soon as we move! In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good OB/GYN in Beil? I am pregnant and need to find one ASAP... oh, I will need to find a pediatrician for my son as well if you have any doctors you would recommend.

Thanks! Meet you soon!

Jenny

Re: English Playgroup in Biel/Bienne - starts 3rd Feb

Hi,

you may first want to decide where you're going to deliver: in Clinique des Tilleuls or at the Hospital?
If you go to Tilleuls, I can recommend Dr Gerber ( but she is in Lys), She is very good.
Regarding Pediatrician, I am very happy with Dr Ammeter in Bienne.
Do not hesitate if you need more info, I arrived here in more or less the same situation as you: pregnant and 1 child.
I wish you all the best.
Sandrine

Re: English Playgroup in Biel/Bienne - starts 3rd Feb

OB/GYN: Dr Lorenzo Carissimi Schüsspromenade 21, 2502 Biel/Bienne Tel.: 032 323 11 77 can wholeheartedly recommend him. Brilliant doctor and also speaks excellent English.

I can give you the name of our paediatrician if you want, but I doubt he's taking new patients as he's now only working 50% and I think is probably going to retire soon. I can ask around though.

Re: English Playgroup in Biel/Bienne - starts 3rd Feb

Hi there,
I moved here from NYC last April and am now a stay at home mom.
Bienne has been great as it's very convenient. Everything is within walking distance! I feel isolated, but that's only because I know no one here except my neighbours and husband. I think I would have felt the same in Bern...the only difference for me would have been the shopping... But i go to Bern every week on date nights with the husband, so that's not been a challenge.
Other villages in between were very charming, but I would have to drive all the time to get stuff done (including Bern city center). I am a first time mom, so my main concern was how to move about with a stroller, and Bienne has been really easy with that regard.

Hello!

Just to let you know that FamiPlus is now shut for the summer holidays. If it's nice weather, we'll meet in the Stadtpark, same time (Thursdays 2-4)

Have a nice summer

Re: English Playgroup in Biel/Bienne - starts 3rd Feb

I just moved to Biel with a 2.5 year old and 7 month old, from the US, and would love to find a playgroup in English. Did I read correctly that a playgroup starts tomorrow the 18th of August? If yes where?

Yes, starts tomorrow.

Here: FamiPlus Biel, Unterer Quai 1B, 2502 Biel/Bienne

From Zentralplatz, walk towards the lake. Keep the canal on your left. Just after you go under the railway bridge, there's a house set back a bit from the road, white gate with a Famiplus sign on it.
