Maman de jour or Nanny advice needed

Hello,

I am new to the whole looking for child care. At the moment the creches are surprise surprise full and there's no chance I will be getting in one even though we both work and I am due to go back in February. I am starting to look into alternative options. Without the lingo and not being too great at it I wanted to know where to search for childcare and tips. Also the cost of a nanny, and also the general cost of a nanny share with one other family. I have been quoted for 2500chf for nanny share with another child which is too expensive so I need advice on what is expected so I am not taken for a ride. What rules there are and legal stuff if I were to look for a nanny to share with another family.
Lastly... the option of becoming a maman de jour myself! if the worst came to the worst how do they qualify as maman d js? what is needed and where do I get this info?
Any tips or advice greatly appreciated!!

First, have a look at the sticky on childcare, etc. it contains a lot the info you ask about. Search the forum for nanny, and you will find the rules/regs and salary info. Please note nanny and au pair are different.

As for becoming a maman du jour, you have to be approved by the local authorities and had the training to do it officially. In the newish Vaud law,the new term is acceuil famille, or similar. Check with your commune, who should have the details on how to train and get on the official list of approved childcare providers. If that fails, check on the SPJ website of Vaud, they should also have the details.

Firstly, go to your commune, they will have all the information of where to go.
For my canton it's called Crèches à domicile.
They ask you about when you want childcare, and then try to match you up with someone in your area.
As for being a maman du jour, it's not difficult! You'd need to speak a little bit of French I would imagine to understand the training and all the paperwork (that's assuming you'd just be offering for English speaking kids - if not then you'd need to be able to communicate in French to speak to children and parents!)
It's not an expensive option, as calculated by how much you and your partner earn. They will have a list when you get in touch. It's meant to be more expensive than a crèche, but for some reason ours is less.

I think a MdJ is a good option. Part of me thinks crèches are a better idea as your little one gets to see lots of other little kids. Our crèche didn't offer enough hours, so we took the MdJ option. It's actually really nice though as my daughter now knows her and her kids really well, and she is really flexible.

Good luck!

Re: Maman de jour or Nanny advice needed

Hi everyone. I'm new to this site, so let's see how I fare

I am intending to send my 4 year old daughter to the local state kindergarten once we get to Switzerland (March) and have registered with the local authorities (etc etc). I understand that the hours for kindergarten are fairly short, indeed that there is no KG on wed afternoons, and am trying to look into the services of a mamman de jour or carer for the hours that I'm still at work after her kindergarten finishes.

Does anyone have an idea as to whether it's possible to hire the services of such a person part time and what the hourly cost would be?

As Vevey is Canton VD, there are basically two options, parascolaire, ie. school aged children who need care for midday meals and often after school; and l'accueil familial de jour (the old maman de jour), care by a trained babysitter/childminder in the village. I am not sure the Vevey parascolaire offers care on Weds. afternoon, some do and some don't, so please inquire directly with them. I've found these two websites for Vevey which should explain it all and give you the contacts.

Hello there... u can try anibis ( url is http://www.anibis.ch)
The website is in french but am sure google translate can help.

Try searching for "Maman de jour" or "nounou" and you can get plenty of options to chose from. You can put you own advert there too.

Most maman de jour you get there speak french/spanish. But if you are lucky you can find someone speaking english too.

To be honest, I would not recommend searching Anibis for qualified child care, it can be quite risky. Using Anibis to find an apartment, maybe, using Anibis to find a car, ok.

With the system put in place by VD for parascolaire and acceuil familial, you have a good structure for qualifed childcare with set fee structure.

I have a question which I couldn't find answer to. What if you hire someone who has no permit. What are the penalties of that and not declaring them as an employee?

Do you really want people to comment on the repercussions of breaking the law on the forum? Seems there were some new forum rules on this recently. Anyhow, if EU, you can go ahead and get the pemit for them. Assuming non-EU, then a whole host of other issues arises, not only the permit status but lack of health insurance, non-payment of social charges, tax evasion, no accident or liability insurance, etc..

Get caught and you risk being given a "black mark" on your passport. A serious problem if you want to get a visa in another country....criminal history is never a good thing...
