Back specialist in Zurich

Can anyone recommend a back specialist in Zurich. I have already searched and could find anything.

I had surgery on my neck/spine over 2 years ago and I'm now plagued with chronic back pain. I have regular massage/physio/ acupuncture and so far the pain relief has been very short term :-( I know I could ask any of these therapists for advice, but would prefer a recommendation from someone who has a personal experience.

I do not want to go to ABC surgeon who straight away will wield the knife - been there, don't that, go the T-shirt.

Thanks in advance.

No idea post surgery back issues but have you tried a chiropractor? I really do swear by them for any muscular issues. I hear so many mention physio and osteopaths but not chiros so it's quite an obvious question but i know some people haven't used them

Thanks for your feedback. I was told by my previous back surgeon that I should most definitely stay clear of a chiropractor. The herniated disc I had previously was almost touching my spinal chord and the consequences of any clicking of joints (or whatever they do) would have been, well, pretty dangerous, to say the least...
Although my disc has now been fixed, I am still too afraid to go anywhere near a chiro...

Ah OK i thought maybe your back issue may be too advanced but worth a mention - although they don't always crack your bones around

Re: Back specialist in Zurich

Yes. Have had 4 back operations . The first two in the UK in the 1960s and the second two here in Switzerland within the last 10 years.

After the first two operations I had absolutely NO problems. After the second two operations I was on pain killers for 3.5 years and really had to take them to function at all.

Whether the fact that I had no problems after the first two operations was due to age (13), or the fact that I had to lie flat for 3 months and was in a plaster cast for 9 months, I shall never really know. Am not convinced that the modern practice of getting someone out of bed a day or two after spinal surgery and sending them home after 5-10 days is conducive to the healing process.

However, after my last operation I also tried cortisone injections into the spinal canal (worked for a few weeks), went to the pain clinic in Basel who could offer nothing better than various medicaments including an anti-depressive which shuts off the pain centre in the brain. Homeopathy made the pain worse. Cranio sacral massage/physiotherapy worked for a few days. What really DID help and finally got me off the pain killers was Anthroposphic medicine. From the first visit I was able to leave off the analgesics and noticed an improvement in agility and other health matters.

There are surely anthroposophic doctors in Zürich but you may have to "shop around" as they usually have waiting lists and can be difficult to get an appointment. Good luck.

Anaj, thank you for your feedback. I have an appointment with my GP tomorrow and an Osteopath on Wednesday, so will read up on it before I go.

Forgot to mention osteopathy. Tried that as well and it did nothing for me (which is not to say it will not help you)... Best of luck

A few years back I have been to Brunner&Bonesso http://www.brunnerbonesso.ch/ on Helenastrasse 3 in Zürich and was with Dr Christian Brunner. He was good / very good but as I said, that's all distant memories and I can't compare with anybody else.

I have two herniated discs and go to FunctionMed (specifically to Jan) when I need treatment. Jan is amazing, I swear he has magic hands. He's an osteopath, it's really the only thing that worked for me after not really progressing with the chiro. Hope you feel better, back pain has got to be one of the worst things to deal with.

Re: Back specialist in Zurich

Thank you for all the responses. I have been to visit my GP today, who has said that the muscle at the tip of my spine is very short and inflamed. I am already visiting the osteopath tomorrow, which is also what he advised me to do. I'll see how that goes to begin with and then take it from there.
