IUI Questions

Thank you in advance for your nice, thoughtful responses, as I have posted here before and received some awesome answers.

For those who are familiar with IUI treatments here (specifically Dr. Lang's office in Kuesnacht):

1) Is it possible to do this procedure unmedicated? Usually, they want you to take Femara, injections w FSH or Clomid. But is it possible to not do anything but just the IUI?

2) What is the success rate, if all tests return "normal"?
and finally..

3) Is it 3 IUI procedures that are covered by insurance TOTAL, or 3 IUI procedures allowed per year?

I suppose I can ask these questions at the office, but that won't be for 1.5 weeks when hubbys SA results are in, and I am a bit anxious to "do" something this month.

Thank you in advance!!!!

Re: IUI Questions

Hi

I had IUI with Dr Lang (only one round as it was pointless with my diagnosis)

Anyway yes you get 3 usually on your insurance but it might be best to check with your insurance first

As for medication, he gave me a low dose of clomid (sometimes low dose of Gonal F is used also) - you can certainly ask him about non medicated and he would likely give you the pros and cons answer but ultimately it is your choice i suppose. What reasons do you want to have an unmedicated cycle? they only like you to produce 2 follicles and often IUI cycles are abandoned if they find more than 2 follicles after stimulation.

Success rates - well obviously it works for some but I think IVF is clearly more successful but if you can do IUI (i.e you dont have blocked tubes) then you may as well give the 3 free goes a chance before making any further decisions and who knows you may be successful

Good luck

Re: IUI Questions

Thank you for your response!

Is it 3 rounds on insurance total, or per year? For example, if we do one iui in Dec. will the 3 rounds start again with the new year, or will the Dec round subtract from the only 3 I am ever afforded with insurance?

Thanks so much.

Re: IUI Questions

Not sure about that but most gynes would likely want go for the next treatment if 3 rounds of IUI doesn't work

Your best bet is to call your insurance because what goes for one may not go for another (I found that out the hard way)

Re: IUI Questions

We were told its 3 rounds total. It probably depends on your insurance though. Ours provides three goes at IUI, 3 goes at IVF and covers medicines for one calendar year.

Good luck!

Really? Your insurance covers IV? Can I ask what company you are with?

Re: IUI Questions

I'm with OKK. But after I wrote that I read some other posts and began to doubt. What the doc said was that they would do up to 3 goes of IVF... and I took it to mean that the insurance would cover that. It looks like that was not what she meant. Hmmm, I will have to clarify what is covered at the next visit. We are only on the first round of IUI so fingers crossed this works.

Re: IUI Questions

I think you likely missunderstood - iVF isn't covered at all as far as I know by any insurance. An average round IVF costs around 7-10k depending in clinic and how much drugs you need.

Re: IUI Questions

Ah. I was surprised to hear it was covered. I would have changed insurance.

But can I clarify? IVF not covered. Is IUI covered?
(although it's so much less expensive, that's not the one that needs to be covered. lol. )

Re: IUI Questions

Yes IUI x3 rounds covered. IVF not covered at all. The only thing I was able to claim on insurance was one ultrasound because it can be put through as general Gyne procedure. But only one of the many ultra sounds that are needed during treatment
