Baby in vaud

Hello,
I am married to a swiss and have my bpermit. We have just found out we are pregnant :-) :-). We are insurred with the basic coverage but i am not sure if this includes anything about pregnancy and doctor visits.

I have my first appointment with the gyno mid jan and i am wondering if his visit and further visits will be covered by my insurance and if the birth would be also? Or do i need to add some cover or will i be able to!

Just something that lessens the financial strain that we may occur!

Thanks

Yes, basic healthcare will cover all costs related the the pregnancy and birth, including all the regular gynaecologist visits. I would suggest getting in touch with your insurer to let them know and they should be able to give you full details.

Congratulations and best of luck!

Re: Baby in vaud

I agree with GenevaSculler, Basic Health Insurance does cover everything in a pregnancy. Beware though of your insurance sending you the hospital bill anyway: not sure whether this was a mistake or something else, but they did send me a bill for 2000 something Francs after I gave birth, although this was all supposed to be covered... I called and everything was straightened out very quickly... just something to know I guess.
Congratulations and enjoy!

Hi
I had my baby in Lausanne and basic coverage is perfect. They cover everything. All of my friends also have basic coverage and they were fine.

Congratulations

As previous posters have said, basic will cover all the costs. Some of the benefits of having extra insurance are:
You may choose a different hospital - in my case i didn't like the reputation of my local hospital, because i had extra insurance i was allowed to give birth in the hospital of my choice (in a different kanton)
More scans, you get a standard 6 or 8 scans (cannot remember) the basic will cover more if there is a underlying health issue that requires more scans. But if you just want to have more scans simply because you want to see baba more often, basic won't cover it.
Sometimes extra insurance packages may allow you a private room after birth.
I am sure there are more, these are the ones i am experienced with. But seriously standard insurance will give you extremely good care for you and baby.

Enjoy this special time

Congratulations. I am pregnant too. Tip for you, don't leave it too late to get your baby's health insurance sorted. You don't start paying until after baby is born, it is one thing out of the way and you never know when baby may make an appearance. Last week i was rushing out in the snow to sort out my baby's insurance after a scare at my last scan and i've got months to go (or so i thought).

Re: Baby in vaud

Hello and congrats !
As everyone has mentioned, basic insurance covers for your pregnancy.
If you are interested in getting more "mommy info" to be prepared and feel more relaxed about having a baby here, I would strongly suggest that you talk to other moms or moms to be. FYI - There is a coffee meeting of English speaking moms going every other Tuesdays (10am-13pm)at the St.Laurent Starbucks across from COOP City.
Take good care and congratulations again.

A tip for you:

Get the insurance for your baby sorted BEFORE he/she is born. If you do this BEFORE the birth the baby is automatically accepted without any examinations. Obviously the insurance only kicks after the birth.

And Congratulations!

This is rubbish. The baby is covered under the mothers health insurance for up to 30 days after birth.

You can take ANY Swiss insurance and they are obliged BY LAW to accept you under LaMAL.

As mother is pregnant and visiting doctors etc, the bills get sent to the insurance company automatically. The insurance company will quickly realise that a birth is imminent and will contact you accordingly to hawk thier wares, but there is absolutely NO WAY any Swiss insurance company can refuse insurance, before, during or after the birth.

I was not talking about refusing. I agree refusal cannot occur but if insurance taken after birth the baby must go through the exams - at least this is what happened to a friend of ours so we took insurance beforehand. I am not aware about this 30 day policy (it may be new). do you have a link or documentation?
