Birth registration

Hi,

I had my daugther 3 weeks ago in SZ. I went to the zivilstandsamt to have her registered. Both my husband and i are british and the zivilstandsamt are asking for our birth certificates to be issued within the last 6months and then translated into German. This means i have to ask the uk registry office to re-issue our birth certificates.
Has anyone else had the same experience?

Apologies if this has already been discussed in the forum. Please direct me to the correct link for the information i may need.

Thanks

Re: Birth registration

Hi ZE,

Just follow the link given by trailingfidanzata. I ordered my certificate from there last week and it arrived within 2 weeks.

Perhaps the rules here differ from canton to canton, but in ZH they accept birth certificates in English, French, German or Italian. Pls recheck - it could save you some money!

Re: Birth registration

Thanks for the information. I went to the office today and they said that it needed to be translated into german. i find the whole system very long and unnecessary.

Re: Birth registration

Your location says you are in Geneva, and certainly in Geneva they accept birth certificates in English.

Re: Birth registration

my daughter is 3 months old and her birth has still not been registered. The process is unbelievably long and drawn out. I am in canton bern and we also have to translate the certificates into french or german. It has already been 2 weeks that the translator has had our certificates (granted one week he was on holiday). At this rate, my daughter may already be a year old by the time her birth is even registered

Re: Birth registration

There is an excellent translator who is extra speedy and quick who is a member on this site. PM me if you want her details. Subject to her workload, she would turn something as straightforward as a birth certificate around in a couple of days.

Re: Birth registration

I went through this process in Bern this summer when my son was born. It is a bureaucratic and long process. I had to get an affidavit from the American embassy and a registry from the Japanese government... However, the canton accepted my original birth certificate (with translation) and the current registry (within the past 6 months) which collaborates the information on the birth certificate: date of birth, parentage, registry municipality... Which is to say, there is some flexibility in the system in light of common sense.

Good luck!
