Cost of ultrasound

Hello all,

I have to go for an abdominal ultrasound scan next week, and was just wondering if anyone has had a similar procedure and what sort of cost to expect? I'm a little worried that I'm going to be stuck with a huge bill and knowing this in advance would cushion the blow at least a little... Thanks!

Aren't you covered by compulsory health insurance?

Cost will be up to your annual excess (between 300 and 2000 CHF), plus 10 % up to a maximum of 700 CHF.

So the worst case scenario is 2700 CHF.

My opinion is that if you need abdominal ultrasound scan you should go for it and not worry about the cost.

If you cannot pay ask fellow EF members for help. I give you 20 CHF.

Click the tab Rechnung/Bsp.

Based on other visits with Ultrasound I would say the ballpark figure is around 300-500 for a visit with consultation, USG and some blood tests.

Re: Cost of ultrasound

I meant how much will the charge be? I mean, my deductible is 1000CHF so I know worst case scenario it will be 1700CHF but I sincerely hope it's not that much! I was looking for a more accurate figure from someone who's had one... whether it's 100, 500 etc... (up to 1000 will have to come out of my own pocket - gulp!).

EDIT: Wrote this before yacek's reply - that's more the kind of information I was looking for! I was expecting maybe 300CHF, massively hope it's not as much as 500CHF but we'll see.

Re: Cost of ultrasound

Looking over the bill I have from an abdominal scan and gastroendoscopy... the total came to 718; unfortunately I don't have the detail - so I don't know how much was the scan, how much the endoscopy.

I'd guess that the largest part was for the endoscopy - so maybe 2-300 for the ultrasound?

Re: Cost of ultrasound

Yeah, that's about what I was expecting. Thanks for the help! I was so worried about getting a ridiculous bill that I would have no hope of paying, but a simple ultrasound seems like it would be ok. Panic subsided!

Re: Cost of ultrasound

I also should note that this was done at the hospital, not at the Praxis... I don't know if different tariffs apply depending on where it's done, and by whom (GP/Specialist).

Come to think of it, though, my experience has been that stuff done at the hospital is often more reasonable than at the local doc's. Go figure...

Good luck - hope all turns out OK.

Re: Cost of ultrasound

I had one done some months ago at the doctor's practice. The total including the consultation was around 270. Had the doctor sent me to an specialist to perform the ultrasound the cost would have been higher.

Re: Cost of ultrasound

FYI: Just got my bill for the ultrasound - about 200CHF, so not hideous. That was at the IRN (Radiology Centre on Rue Pury).

I was going to suggest a trip to KFC after the scans but I changed my mind after grynch said he wanted to go head hunting too. Not sure I could stomach all that in one day.

Nelly, don't worry, the colonoscopy doesn't go up as far as your stomach...and thanks to the drugs you'd be happy enough for a KFC after :-)
