| | | HPV Vaccine - Gardasil - for males
Hello all,
In the US the HPV vaccine is now available for males up to age 26: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/756274_12
I would like to get this vaccine, but it's a series of 3, so it wouldn't be possible for me to correctly time three visits to the US (where I'm from) in this way. So, I am trying to find out if it's possible for me to get it here (I'm in the Zurich area, but I can take the train to wherever).
Does anyone have any information or experience with this? I have checked the internet and called a few places, but so far I have been unable to get any conclusion about if it's possible to get it in Switzerland or not, as a male that is.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Can you self-administer or have a friend administer it to you (like a diabetic does insulin)?
Or have your doctor here administer them?

What about just asking your Dr as a starting point?
It is available here for children, specifically girls, but can be given to boys but is a cost issue rather than medical one.
You would have to pay for the treatment (i.e. administration) and the vaccine itself. I don't know if you would be liable for any treatment costs if there were complications - I assume not, but you never know. All worth specifically asking.

I don't have a doctor here. I also guessed that I would have to pay it out of pocket, and this is OK for me.
I just now tried to call the Zurich Unispital again, the call got forwarded around to various people until it finally landed on someone who didn't speak any English, so I got an officemate to ask in German - but again I seemed to get the answer that they don't do it, but it was not clear whether or not it is just that that particular place doesn't do it, or that it's not possible/allowed for men.

Gardasil is a GP/paediatrician administered treatment.
The hospital wouldn't be the place to ask. You either need to go to a drop-in health clinic or find a GP (who speakers English) or DIY (rather you than me...).
Don't know of any drop-in clinics in Baden, however there is one at Zurich HB that all Zurichers rave about (you'll have to search EF) and also one in Basel SBB - which will doubless be better, just, well, because. | | The following 2 users would like to thank Carlos R for this useful post:

I am assuming you have made a well-informed decision on taking the HPV vaccine. Recently a movie has been released which may interest you. http://www.greatergoodmovie.org/home | | This user would like to thank Uno'sGarden for this useful post: | | | This user groans at Uno'sGarden for this post:

I'm interested about the last sound bite: "show us the science and give us the choice".
Under the freedom of information act, let alone various EMA and FDA edicts, you can demand to see all the data for studies.
Why aren't these people who are worried about vaccination doing so?

I already called Permanence at HB (I guess this is what you mean), they do not give the vaccination, they gave me the phone number of the University Hospital, which is where I was sent in circles and given the vague - but seemingly negative - response.

Don't know about the males. But all the swiss kantons are offering free HPV vaccines for young women (until end of 2012 also for women under 26. before, it was under 19). http://www.bag.admin.ch/impfinformat...x.html?lang=de
I just got the first one of the three. It was quite painful.

Just keep in mind that the vaccination is ineffective if you have been exposed to the virus already - if you might have - don't forget about screening! I would strongly advocate vaccination for boys too...it is an often overseen fact that high risk HPV strains are responsible for a large part of anal and even colon cancers in gay men...
