birth in Paracelsus-Spital Richterswil

Hi all

I was wondering if I`m stupid to rather give birth in Paracelsus-Spital in Richterswil though I have full private insurance and can go to any of the fancier private clinics. The reason I wish to give birth in Paracelsus it`s cause it`s next door, 100 meter away from our house. It`s small, cosy and it`s in our hometown Richetrswil with great view of the lake and people are easy going there nd it`s never crowded . It also feels like a home rather than a hospital?

Any tips? It`s my first baby so I really have no clue what to expect!

Re: birth in Paracelsus-Spital Richterswil

Give birth where you feel most comfortable...

Have you checked out their birthing facilities and also met some of their midwives ?

I used 100% midwife care for all my three children, and they really do 'most of the work' when it comes to childbirth (well, that is, other than the mum ).

I'd certainly rather have a clinic 100m down the road, than having to drive to hospital whilst in labour....

One question I would ask (but this will possibly be the same issue regardless of whether you use a fancy clinic or not) - is about complications - if there are complications, will you and baby likely be transferred to one of the bigger hospitals ? What if baby needs emergency care ? What if you go into labour early ?

I'd also check about postnatal care, and midwife care at home...how long do they expect you to stay in hospital, and do they do visits at home - although I get the impression this is pretty standard for Switzerland...

Re: birth in Paracelsus-Spital Richterswil

I have witnessed 12 births; 8 epidurals (on their back), 3 c-sections (1 was an emergency c-sect), and 1 natural birth at Paracelsus (my baby - no drugs or intervention.)

Any place will do, but there is something special about Paracelsus. Maybe it's just the philosophy that I like - they do not induce labor (pitocin). Otherwise, the docs are there for emergencies.

Go where you want to go! I gave birth to mine all in the states, and for the first 2 I had friends and neighbors who were snobby and couldn't believe I went where I did. I will say in the states it is a bit different as you have to go where you dr. has hospital rights, or something like that. By the time my 3rd baby was born, the hospitals had consolidated and I had to go to the "better" place. luckily, most of the staff were the same, but I was much happier at the "other" hospital... Their rules were more flexible, I got lots of attention as they were less busy and they were much friendlier with visitors. Not to mention, I had a pirvate room there. The 3rd time I got a roommate the 2nd day and was ready to pack up and go home because of that, but they made me stay until 48 hours after the birth to monitor the baby (I had to have antibiotics during that birth)'

Your gut feeling can mean a lot, and if you are comfortable with the place next door and their facilities then I am sure you will be fine!

Good luck - and don't get too scared/anxious about the unknown - that birth will happen, and then it will be over!

Of course, go where your intuition tells you. I hope the best for you and your birthing experience. Interesting fact I heard tonight; Paracelsus is the only place in Zurich that will deliver a breech presentation. All other hospitals will go to C-sect. Just an FYI.

Winterthur does breech births as well, a friend of mine opted for it, though the birth was too complicated, so in the end it was C-section.

Another friend had her second daughter at Paracelsus, she is a nurse. It is about 20mins drive from here, but she wanted to have her baby there, and was very happy.

Re: birth in Paracelsus-Spital Richterswil

My friend had her baby there (I assume there is only one hosptial in Richterswil) and while the experience was OK she did get a bit freaked out by the number of times they wanted to give her crystals to speed up labour! They did have epidurals available if you wanted them but preferred to give all sorts of herbal remedies.

She and her husband did stay in a family room for the 5 nights which was a really good deal and far cheaper than a private room (although that's not an issue for you as you have private cover).

I do have to say she is looking for alternatives for when she has her next baby.

Re: birth in Paracelsus-Spital Richterswil

I haven't been to Paracelsus but I gave birth at a birth house in Zurich and this hospital was their preferred alternative if they were not able to deliver the baby at the birth house (e.g. if birth not within 39 and 40+10d weeks, or any other issues that required a doctor supervision), because apparently the philosophy there is most similar to the birth house - favouring no interventions, alternative treatments etc. Sounds like this is true from what Pepper says!

I echo what others say about choosing where you feel most comfortable, I paid extra to go to the birth house (only had basic insurance) because it felt relaxing and homely. There is a lot to be said for not having to travel far too - I had a quick and straightforward labour but the worst bit was the 20-25mins in the car!

Re: birth in Paracelsus-Spital Richterswil

My son was born there last year, and my niece this year. The staff are out of this world, absolutely amazing. The food is also great and everything is organic and only use the best for you and your baby. Plus the scenery......

It's a natural hospital where the emphasis is using natural "stuff" but have normal meds (who wants those?) upon request.
Hence the name Paracelsus.
