Hi,

My baby is allergic to cows milk, and has BM, solids with that horrible expensive milk you get on prescription. Dr has said to just carry on bf. We are not keen on doing it forever... Went to uk dr who said we should have had a proper test (not just putting dairy on their cheek and seeing a reaction). Also that we need to see a ped dietician to advise on introducing dairy later.

Any advice on this?

They will do blood tests when the child gets older, but they are not very accurate on small children (and also children who are breastfed)....

You won't be doing it forever, when your child is old enough to eat 100% for themselves, they can have a non-dairy diet, and special formula or other milk.

You can also ask for a referral from your Paediatrician to a Paediatric allergy specialist.

How do you feel about doing blood tests and then finding out what you already know ? My daughter had lots of allergies, and all the blood test said was 'Oh, yes, she has lots of allergies'...

Did you do anything different once you knew the specific allergies?

Had a friend whose child had a milk allergy. She was advised to feed him on Rivella which is made from milk serum during his first years of life. Seemed to work and he survived without milk.

Badgerman, the Unispital has a good allergy clinic. Not sure how young they treat people though. I have had very severe dairy allergies (anaphylaxis) all my life and got myself tested and investigated again when living in Basel. I was referred to the clinic by my local doctor.

I would be very very careful about the Rivella - it may depend on exactly what your child is allergic to. I know that Rivella could spell the end of me if I didn't have an adrenaline injection on hand.
