What a fabulous review... We have budgeted about 30,000CHF, as we only have basic Insurance and want the full works!! The USA was about $30,000, that included my stay and Gyne delivering. I am 35 weeks now, and my 4th baby, no problems with the other 3, all full term and healthy as can be, so fingers crossed number 4 will be a smooth ride too!.
It's great that you have the means to choose, I just get a niggling feeling that you're thinking US private and Swiss private are comparable - they're not. You still get "the full works" in Switzerland on basic insurance, it's not a pauper's option. The difference is that you have more choice of hospitals and don't have to share a room. My general advice would be to check out the hospitals that your insurer will cover the medical expenses for and get a quote on paying the upgrade to private for your 'wochenbett' (stay in hospital after birth), before opting for a fully private hospital where you'll have to pay for absolutely anything. However I realise you don't have much time to decide so good luck with whatever you decide!

(FWIW, I had only basic insurance and chose to go to a private birth house, insurer paid medical fees and I paid for the wochenbett.)

I had 2 weeks also, 1 week bedrest first and I was also sad to leave - my UK friends didn't understand at all why I wouldn't want to leave hospital, they all left the same day or next day.
I went home the next day out of choice, couldn't wait to get back to my own place, own stuff, lovely baby room. In the UK mother's get practically thrown out of hospital once they can stand up don't they?! Some of my friends are very envious of the Swiss system.

I almost had to be dragged home kicking and screaming, I was very disappointed when my breakfast wasn't served to me the following day on a tray with a cloche and I didn't receive a menu to choose my lunch and dinner oh yes hospital was nice, it was like a nice safe bubble

Sorry for the late response...I have just had a bad cold and am only just catching up with stuff. My Ob/Gyn is Dr B. Vogel on Forchstrasse. He is very nice and very good and delivered both my babies by c-section. He is my regular Gyn.

Re: Hirslanden Klinik Maternity reviews please?

If anyone is still interested, I recently gave birth to my baby girl at the Hirslanden.

Overall, the facilities and care of the staff were excellent. I also received excellent support and advice about breastfeeding, so no complaints there. The food and attention to detail was really rather good (nutrition being particularly important when you have just given birth).

There was one huge drawback however; currently the Hirslanden is undergoing construction works, which are happening next to the maternity ward, causing a huge amount of noise - not good for recuperation. We actually went for a visit of the maternity ward, but this was at 7 pm, after the workers had downed-tools for the day, so we had no idea.

Overall I would recommend it, but do check whether these works are still on-going.

Happy Birthing!

Re: Hirslanden Klinik Maternity reviews please?

I had my first baby at Hirslanden in January. I cannot speak more highly of the hospital, it's facilities and the staff and agree with others that it was like a five star hotel. All the staff were fantastic and helpful, always coming to see if I needed anything and giving me advice on how to make sure I was doing everything right, from comforting him to taking his temperature. I decided to breastfeed, and a Lactation specialist saw me the day after the birth, again giving me some great techniques to use. (In the 6 months since, I haven't had any problems with feeding him, which I feel was because of the thorough care I was given). I was encouraged to feed him every three to four hours, which is what I had planned to do. One night after spending what seemed like hours feeding him, a nurse actually weighed him before and after a feed to make sure he was getting enough (he was!)

I also had a physio come and give me gentle exercises to do in the initial days and weeks after the delivery. They also offer classes, such as how to wash your baby all of which was invaluable and made taking our new born son home less daunting, especially as we don't have our family for support.

I do, however, have one complaint. During the c-section my son's clavicle was broken. Apparently this can happen due to the pressure of pulling and tugging him out, especially as he was quite a large baby. It has since resulted in months of physiotherapy. I am happy to report he is fine now

Re: Hirslanden Klinik Maternity reviews please?

I have been in the Klinik Hirslanden in Zurich for almost a week now after cesarian. Everything has been great up until today when something very concerning happened. As I was unscrewing the cap off the glass baby bottle provided by the nurse for pumping, a piece of the glass fell into the bottle ... luckily I heard the sound of it and informed the nurse, who's reaction to it was even more concerning "oh, we'll just have to through the pumped milk away ..." not acknowledging at all the danger that it could have meant to the baby have the milk been fed by cup to the baby. Am awaiting now for a hospital guest relations and also the nurse supervisor for further actions about this. Photo attached.
