Anyone have a child in Ecole La Decouverte?

Hi guys,

Does anyone have a child or know anyone who had a child at this school?

Just a few questions if you have a moment:

1) Do they have tests at this school? I am unsure based on their website.

2) Anyone have any experience with schools like this that don't use grades? It only goes up to age 13. How did you find your children integrated into high school/ university with grade based system?

3) How does the education there stand up to other schools?

And any other comments you have about this school I'd love to hear!

Thanks!

Re: Anyone have a child in Ecole La Decouverte?

First, I know many parents that have children at this school and they all have high regards for it.

It is a fairly new school, so the children I know there are still there and have not moved on after age 13 yet, so I don't know the intergration in other schools is yet.

As it is a fairly innovative and unique approach to early education, not sure how it 'stands up' to other schools. All I can say is that the children learn and seem very happy and well rounded.

Thank you runningdeer for your comment.

Do Montessori schools also have no grades? I wonder if other schools also have a similar model that I could compare it to, to see if the no grade system works in the long run.

Re: Anyone have a child in Ecole La Decouverte?

On their website it says:

" 1992 - establishment of the association The Discovery School by Catherine Firmenich, Irene and Walter Etiennette Vellas and opening of the school at 5, ch. Colombettes in the neighborhood of the United Nations. • 2000 - The creation of SA Discovery with members of the Board are: Jean-Claude Bres, referral and educational secretary, Firmenich Michel, Treasurer and Catherine Firmenich, President • 2002 - December : School celebrates 10 years • 2006 - September: moving from school to 11th Ave. Sécheron • 2012 ... the school will celebrate 20 years"

So I suppose it's 20 years old this year. Which is good. I may be able to get some stats from them then on how many of their kids go onto university etc.

Yes, the Montesorri school here, at least the one in Geneva, does not have grades at least in the early primary level.

Montessori schools do not grade their students as this is a part of the Montessori philosophy. To make sure the Montessori school is a real one, make sure to contact the AMI and ask them if the school has the AMI accreditation. Without this label of quality, you should definitly run away from the establishment

Rudolf Steiner Schools do not grade too. I am about to start working in one as an English teacher. It will be a super interesting experience for me!

Do not ask me if it works or not though! No idea. I have some theoretical knowledge but no practical experience.
