Average cost of giving birth in Switz or Germany?

So, turns out i can have a baby in any country i want.. as long as it doesnt cost more than 8200euro....

Also 2,200euro for gyno etc.

In Switzerand will it cover much? or will i be left with a hefty bill?

Does any one know the average price in Germany?

Need to know asap as ive only a week left to cancel our policy

Appreciate any help!!!

If you have Swiss insurance, and have a baby in Switzerland, it will cost you nothing.

Re: Average cost of giving birth in Switz or Germany?

I`m still confused.

Why would you want to cancel your policy and pay to have your baby in a different country??? If you are living here and have a medical insurance EVERYTHING is covered from the Doc that checks you up, to tests and medi that you might need.

Also please think that babies come when they want and unless you are planning to take a hell road ride over to Germany with labor pains you might have to invest in extra costs for a hotel.

Charz,

Before you get your knickers in a knot let me explain some more!

I have health insurance. An international health insurance. Which covers me in Germany/Switzerland and France as i am on the border of all 3 countries.

Hotel is not needed, German hosp is 10 minutes away, so i think i might just about survive the "hell of a road ride".

This health insurance covers me over 8000Euro for giving birth and 2200 for all the apopintments and scans needed before it. Also another 16000 or so for C section or emergency.

My ideal choice country is Switzerland. Im really set on it. It is the easiest for me to get to and i am the most comfortable witht the language plus ive been in the hospital before and wa s really impressed.

So, i would like to know if the money my insurance gives me is enough to cover the costs or would i be out of pocket by much!

I know in Ireland, that much money would be fine. I dont know about Germany and Switzerland though.

Why don't you just ask at the hospital? Surely they're best placed to give you a list of their tarifs (including the 'what ifs' that would be extras).

Re: Average cost of giving birth in Switz or Germany?

Well I aint getting my knickers in a knot but was just trying to figure out what you were meaning sometimes a bit more info helps in the first post so that nobody is confused.

As for where to go then maybe the best would be where you feel the most comfortable. I know you are worried about the costs but if complications do appear then each country will be expensive. It surprises me then that your insurance gives a limit on something like that

Not sure how you can find out the full costs as it will depend how often you go to the doc and how things progress. The only thing I can think on for you to do would be to ask a Dr in each country -via phone- what you could count with. Please remember that hospital bills also need to be payed and ask your insurance if this is extra covered otherwsie it might get a bit tight on their budget. Alternative maybe house birth?

Re: Average cost of giving birth in Switz or Germany?

Oddly for EF, I'll try and answer your question rather than give you the third degree and why you are pregnant and whether your car is OK to transport you etc etc etc

We had our baby a year ago and I need to pay the bills today so I have them in front of me. The total was CHF13000 for the delivery and CHF2700 for the care of the baby after birth - so CHF15700 in total for the stay. That was at a hospital in Bern with admittedly a very nice package, solo room etc and a relatively straightforward birth.

The room cost of that was CHF630 per day, for 6 days, so CHF3700 in total - maybe a shared room would be half that (guess?) so you'd maybe reduce it by CHF2000 to CHF14000 or so - which is Euro 11600.

So - I'm sure that there are other cheaper and more expensive options out there - but I VERY much doubt you could get to Eur 8000, sorry

i don't know if 8000 euro is enough for giving birth, but i heard that 1 night at public ward CHUV cost 1000 chf.

But i do know that 2200 for all the appointment and scan is not enough.
Currently i'm on month 6, and it is already over 2200.
  • 4 doctor appointments @ 150 - 200 each ( 3 more to go)
  • scan at week 12 is around 200 chf
  • scan at week 22 is around 430 chf
  • 2 taxoplamosis test : 200 and 500 chf
  • culture urine test : 190 chf
  • 4 blood test @ 100 - 250 chf each
And i'm having normal pregnancy, no complications.
If you are having complication or high risk pregnancy, i imagine you're going to need more appointment and scans.

Ah, the ever popular "why should I contribute like everyone else when I can cop out on some el cheapo insurance that will put enough sand in the eyes of the Swiss authorities to stop them from pestering me about health insurance" spiel. You pay yer money, you take yer chances.

Well you've already established that it doesn't cover you. It will contribute some money towards your hospital bill. Which the hospital may well ask to be settled upfront, unlike for a regular Swiss (or German or French for that matter) health insurance.

In any event, the figures that you hear are for a non-complication birth. Will your savings pay if things go wrong, e.g. if you require an emergency cesarean section? Maybe getting Swiss health insurance now might be an excellent idea if you are a Swiss resident. And yes, basic insurance (Grundversicherung) will cover costs, even if you are already pregnant.

I know that in Britain (a) going private for a birth is a lot more expensive than CHF 8'000, I've heard from friends paying between GBP 15'000 and GBP 30'000, (b) no-one knows how much an NHS birth actually costs, not even the NHS itself. Much the same for Ireland I suppose.

That would be for the baby's insurance to pay. Did you not sign him/her up for health insurance?

Re: Average cost of giving birth in Switz or Germany?

Did some research for you and it is more than impossible to get a "real estimate" as all moms to be do the easy thing and get a medical insurance and let them pay the bills. Maybe you could check out this page though and find some help.

www.swissmom.ch Is however in German but I think you can manage.

One thing is for sure...I doubt you will get by with so less for a "pregnancy - birth package" and that is even if everything goes right. Do yourself and your nerves the favour...if possible sign up for a swiss medi. This is only advice and not telling you that you must

In case it helps clarify things, Niamhie has already posted a fair bit about her 'cross-border baby' insurance questions in the above thread.

SUPRA, though it may have been called something else back then, and I don't recall having any special pregnancy insurance, just normal semi-private.

Re: Average cost of giving birth in Switz or Germany?

I live in France which is why i didnt get Swiss health insurance also getting international insurance was the easiest option for me. The price of the insurance isnt an issue.

I am now looking into Swiss insurance.

If i choose to cancel my insurance i need to do so before a certain date or i have ot pay more money that would be completly pointlsess.

Anyways i came on to ask some questions. Seek advice.

Thank you but if i wanted a lecture id call my mother.

My health insurance is fine for france but my needs have changed.
