Buying affordable kid bikes?

We are looking to buy bikes for our kids and they seem so expensive. Could anyone recommend a good store to find a decent priced bike?
Or anyone selling a bike for a 4 or 8 year old?

Re: Buying affordable kid bikes?

Jumbo or Carrefour should find kids bikes for under CHF100 with 2 year guarantee.

The best possible bike you can get to your child is the wooden, pedal-less LikeABike and, although it is expensive, I think it is well worth the price (and I think there are slightly cheaper versions of the same thing) because it forces your child to really ride and play and not just sit on it and wait for you to push or pull them around.

Don't touch those with a bargepole. They are usually utter cr*p, brakes won't be worth diddly-squat, quality is so bad that you can expect to break bits when you try adjusting anything.

Migros bikes are pretty good quality, have a guarantee that is worth something and will have some resale value when you're done with them.

Failing that, look on Ricardo as someone suggested. If you find something dirt-cheap though, it's likely to be one of those no-name bikes.

For a 4-year old something like the Like-a-Bike is great for the motor skills and balance. There are now metal versions on the market.

Re: Buying affordable kid bikes?

Our town has a Velobörse every year. You bring your old bikes, sell them for 70 francs, and buy someone else's for 50 francs. Then next year, after the kids have outgrown the bikes again, you start the process over again. I've equipped all my biking kids this way with an initial investment of about 200 francs. And most kids don't really care if it's the best quality, just has to look cool and ride.

That reminds me ... there have been threads mentioning those bike markets:
Need a bike - Veloboersen [bike market] and stores and http://www.englishforum.ch/sale-want...e-markets.html. It does tend to go quiet during the winter months though.

They will complain, like mine did, when they find out the brakes aren't very effective. New brake blocks and adjustment didn't help on our no-name bike because the components and brake cable were too flexible. When I was at the Velobörse I had paid more attention to the price than the cheapo shiny bits.

The next bike we bought was a solid one from Migros.
