English speaking pediatrician wanted (near Thalwil-Zurich)

Hey,

I am looking for an English speaking pediatrician, preferably in Thalwil or in center of Zurich. Any recommendations?

Also, my baby isn't born yet, do you recommend to find a pediatrician already before birth, or does it matter?

And if you contact a pediatrician beforehand, will they (or perhaps the hospital where I give birth (Unispital)) automatically tell you what are the recommended/required baby check up schedules (incl. vaccination time table etc)?

Thanks for any advice!

In Thalwil there is Dr Schenk and Dr Schwank. From what I know they are very different in their styles and you seem to either like one or the other. I did hear that Dr Schenk was not accepting new patients but that may have changed.

With both my boys my husband phoned up once we were home and arranged their one month checkup, your baby will get a check up in the hospital when they are about 3 days old.

When you leave hospital you will get a blue 'health' book which your doctor will write in the weight, height, vaccines etc at every check up and when you go to get them weighed at the Mutter Beratung (not sure how to spell it) they will also write in your baby's blue book. There is a page at the back of the book with a list of all the vaccines and when they are due.

In Zürich, close to Hauptbahnhof (main station). I used to take my kids there, as we lived in Zürich, she's great!

Thanks Pepper. Do Drs Schenk and Schwank have private practices, or are they part of some Gruppenpraxis somewhere? Just wondering where to find them...

Also, I take it you have been to the Mutterberatung in Thalwil, do they speak English there? And am I suppose to go there according to some specific schedule, or just whenever I want?

Both Dr Schenk and Dr Schwank have private practices. Dr Schwank is in the offices above Migros and Dr Schenk is off Schwandelstrasse. You can get their information here http://www.doktor.ch/kinderaerzte/ki...rzte_k_zh.html

The mutterberatung will call you once you are home with the baby (the hospital informs them). If I remember correctly you can go and get the baby weighed on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and if you have questions you can stay and talk to the health visitor (I'm not sure what her correct title is). They did all speak English the last time I went but I was naughty and never went with son 2 so I haven't been for about 3 years.

You can go every week or just occasionally, it's up to you although with your first you will probably want to go most weeks initially to check they are putting on weight (with number 2 we had scales at home). It is useful to go and chat about things and obviously they will give you the correct name for creams and things that you may need.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions specific to the Thalwil doctors.

Re: English speaking pediatrician wanted (near Thalwil-Zurich)

I-m also with Dr Thomas Schwank-s practice. What I didn-t like about it is that the handful of times I have been there my little one has been seen by 3 different doctors because Dr Schwank wasn-t available at the time my boy needed his vaccinations. There is a locum who works there when Dr Schwank is away, Dr Schmidt. I actually found him quite good because he took the time to answer all my questions as a (paranoid) first time mother. Some docs just dismiss your worries which leaves you feeling anxious even after they-ve told you not to worry. Unfortunately, Dr Schmidt is no longer in private practice but I found the other doc (Ines something) not bad. All spoke v good English, the receptionist(assistant as well.

Re: English speaking pediatrician wanted (near Thalwil-Zurich)

I go to Dr. Schenk since this spring and I am satisfied so far. Especially I like the lady, Dr. Köppelmann, who works in his practice (each time you come to the practice you go randomly to one of these two doctors). Her English is more fluent and she seems to be less in a hurry when answering my questions. Last time she even stayed long after the normal working hours of the practice to finish with our case. Also my daughter is more at ease with female doctors.

The thing I don't like in this practice is that sometimes you have to wait really long for the consultation (~1 hour after the appointed time or even more). If the child is very ill and has fever it might be difficult. Also in the winter it is very hot in the waiting room and all the windows are closed. Just good for spreading viruses among children.

I would be curious to read about the difference in the styles of Dr. Schenk and Dr. Schwank. I didn't have a choice because when I needed urgent consultation for the first time Dr. Schwank was fully booked so we went to Dr. Schenk and became his regular patients. I didn't know which one is better, but I was happy because Dr. Schenk's practice is a bit closer to my house (for some reason, my child gets sick usually on the rainy days ).

Totally agree with TinyK that the female doctor who works with Dr Schenk is fantastic, I'm always so happy when I know it's her that we are seeing. I also agree that the wait at Dr Schenks can be over an hour and although they have toys in the waiting room it's not great when your child is very ill (as I experienced last week). However they never rush you either so I guess it works both ways.

Looks like you've already received some very good advice. I will let you know how it went with my first born. At the hospital, after the birth, they give you a list of all pediatricians in the area currently taking new patients. You could phone the hospital ahead of time and ask them for the list to do the scouting beforehand (if you want to try someone other than the other posters suggested) Good luck and have a happy, quick and as painless as possible birth!

Re: English speaking pediatrician wanted (near Thalwil-Zurich)

Dr. Köppelmann is the best, but she only works 3 days a week I think.

If you are talking about style, Dr. Schenk is to me very calm, very slow. He takes too much time chit-chatting, too much time describing things. Probably why he usually overruns his appointments and you have to wait a long time to see him.

Some parents I know think that Dr. Schenk is the best because he is so calm and relaxed and puts your kids at ease and takes time to answer all your questions. But that is not for me - when I go to the doctor with a sick child I want everything done as quickly as possible. So now I only go if I know Dr. Köppelmann is there.

Dr. Schenk attended the birth of both my kids. It was pre-arranged so we didn't really have a choice.

Re: English speaking pediatrician wanted (near Thalwil-Zurich)

It seems that another lady (a very young one) started working with Dr. Schenk. She examined my daughter today. Does somebody know what is her name?

I hope that she is not a replacement for Dr. Köppelmann, because that would be a pity.

I don't know her name but I think she's training. She's been there twice before for a few weeks and then goes away. She also has to check with Dr Schenk or Dr Kopplemann before deciding on a course of action.

I've had her twice and while she is very pleasant I agree that I would rather see Dr Kopplemann. I will add that I don't spend all my time at the doctors, it just seems like it!

Yes she is only a student and she should not have seen you alone, at least not without consulting one of the other 2. We also see Dr. koppleman and oddly have never seen Dr Schenk. As for taking bew patients, i heard he only takes patients if when baby was born at a hirslanden clinic as he is a staff pediatrician there but I don't know it if is true. I also agree about the long waits but they will give little babies the first time slot of the day if you ask.

More importantly, if you are waiting to have your baby you should sign up to see his wife, Frau Schenk as your post baby midwife, she is amazing. Her English is so so but it doesn't matter because she is just fantastic, and if you don't have a pediatrician and you need a doc in those first weeks she will get you in to see her husband, it's win win.

Re: English speaking pediatrician wanted (near Thalwil-Zurich)

In case anyone didn't hear the rumours yet: Dr. Köppelmann opens her own practice (Praxis Nautilus) in Thalwil. The address is Alte Landstrasse 167 (not far from Coop). I have heard that she will share it with few other female pediatricians. The practice starts working around July 2015. The patients of the Dr. Schenk's practice can choose to stay with Dr. Schenk or to move to the new practice. His assistants are responsible for making appointments for both practices at the moment.

I hope this info would be helpful to someone.

Re: English speaking pediatrician wanted (near Thalwil-Zurich)

1) your baby will be checked by hospital paediatrician 2-3 days after they are born.

2) You can call your insurance company and ask them for a list of paediatricians in your zip code, then do a bit of search on each doctor until you decide who you want to try - or who still accepts new patients in your area...

3) Call and schedule your first month check

4) You can always change doctors if your not happy with your first choice, we changed 2 times and the third dr was our last and best choice in our village

5) Try and pick a dr close to your home, esepcially the first year , it`s easier for Mom to have a short commute to dr when baby is not feeling well !

6) CONGRATS on your pregnancy, it`s really exciting times
