OK-I will finally ask for toothache remedy

I had a rather complicated dental surgery last week Monday and since then I have had terrible pain in my upper jaw and could only bear it by taking ibuprofen 600 every 10 hours. Back to the dentist on Friday and she says it just takes some time.

Now it seems to be a bit better and I was wondering what I could do to speed up the healing process, for I am tired of eating soup and other soft foods

And please don't tell me to see a dentist. I have been twice.

Ponstan 500 is great for dental pain.

Ask your dentist or doctor for a prescription.

I would usually tell you to pop some pills, but you sound a little sick of those, so my suggestions would be:

- warm salt water rinses to aid healing process

- a clove for the pain (either soften with water and pop a whole one by your tooth or crush and then hold against gum depending on where pain is...google will tell you how). Not just a old wives tale, cloves contain eugenol (an antiseptic and anesthetic! so becareful not to overdo it!).

Good luck

You may be able to buy oil of cloves, dab some on the affected area with a cotton wool bud.

Yes I have been on painkillers for more than a week now and cant go on like that forever. Clover oil sounds intersting, that's what I have been looking for. How about chamomile? oes anyone have experience with that?

Re: OK-I will finally ask for toothache remedy

When I had an abcess and felt like removign my face, I just about got by on the combination of iburprofen 600 (which can be taken every 4 hours I believe), but the pain would come back in 2, so I would then double drop paracetamol extra strength (the strongest over the counter version) which would see me through to the 4 hour to drop the ibuprofen again.

So i was on a 2 hour cycle of pill popping, only when the tooth was extracted did the pain and pressure subside.

I always find trying to remain calm, non-stressed and preventing increased blood flow to the area helps. More blood = more pressure.

Good luck, I need to make another trip too. I already know it is a root canal job, is exactly the same issue I had on the same tooth opposite side.

Edit: other herbal remedies have been known to help too, or maybe they just block the senses, but can try that

Yes, I had all four wisdom teeth removed. A guy I know who is a doctor of chemistry recommended chamomile tea ice cubes, i.e. make chamomile tea, freeze it into ice cubes, and suck on them for relief.

I cannot for sure say how much it helped but it certainly didnt hurt. Try it and let us know the results.

True, using it years ago for an abscess put me off cloves for life .

In German I think it is Nelkenöl.

Honestly I remember biting on the occasional clove when my mom made red cabbage - not very tempting

Not sure how anyone would think camomile would help. Perhaps helps an overall relaxation, but unlikely to have any noticeable impact on acute local pain.

The oil of cloves (Note, it's not clover, as you wrote, but clove, girofle, Nelke) can indeed be effective, but really only if it's surface-level pain. If it's down at the root it may not penetrate sufficiently.

Sticking with the Ibuprofen should be fine thoug, and it's not unusual to need them for this length of time, nor is it particularly likely to cause any harm unless you have known issues with them (I've been on 3*600 per day for the last six years).

Apparently you can give camomile suppositories to teething babies, so that might help you too???

Dear me, what does your liver think of that?? It is not normal to need such a huge dose for such a long time. I am sorry you are in such constant pain.

Re: OK-I will finally ask for toothache remedy

Oil of cloves should not be used neat. Dilute with olive oil (1 part clove oil to 2 parts olive oil). Chewing aspirins works as well - tastes disgusting though.

Btw - the maximum medicinal dose of ibuprofen is 2400mg a day, in 800mg doses. So 600mg every ten hours is unlikely to be effective. For sport injuries, my doctor recommends 600mg four times a day at four hour intervals for several days.

The liver tolerates ibuprofen fine. It's the stomach lining that can take a bashing. Double dosing paracetemol, which is toxic to the liver, is potentially dangerous and should not be done. Liver failure can really screw up your day. 4 grams is fine. 8 grams carries a real risk of toxicity.

Finally, whiskey is good. It not only helps with the pain, but it also stops you caring about it. (Also can damage the liver!)

Re: OK-I will finally ask for toothache remedy

I second the suggestion of whisky as if whisky doesn't cure it, it ain't curable. A good bottle of white works, too, if you're on a budget and just want something simple. (though if you do go for the whisky or wine, don't take the ibuprophen as you want to keep your liver). Not to mention drinks are loads more fun and relaxing than an herbal suppository (seriously?! LOL WTF TEE HEE).

Teeth are proof that there is no such thing as a kind and benevolent creator...

Nah - ibuprofen (in medical doses) doesn't really bother the liver much. It's paracetemol and alcohol that should be avoided. Alcoholics at the tipping point have had liver failure after taking normal dose of paracetemol.

Beer is proof that God likes us and wants us to be happy. I think Satan must be responsible for teeth.
