I agree with the comments, and that non-English speakers don't realize the vulgarity of expressions they are using. However when British use "bugger it" or Americans "mother" meaning "motherf..." it reflects the slow moderation of intensity.
It's common here to hear "hure geil" or "hure gut" etc and the speaker doesn't realize it comes from "like a whore". Or an elegant person saying "Läkmir ..." not realizing it is short for "lick my a..." Same process, where the meaning of words changes with time, and new ugly words have to be continually invented.
New ones are presented on http://www.urbandictionary.com/

Re: I got Fed up with my Family Speaking with Food in there Mouth And swearing

The other day I smiled, remembering my English teacher who used to retort, with a slightly smug twist of her lips, and a raised eyebrow, that people who resorted to swearing lacked a good command of other more nuanced vocabulary.

I'm sometimes surprised by the amount of swearing used - and accepted or at least tolerated - in some posts in the EF. What, I wonder, is the point/use/benefit, to anyone at all, of swearing in a written forum?

Swearing is very Swiss, especially with food in one's mouth, my wife being a perfect example.

She is now practicing swearing in English, even though she can't speak it.

I have, however, learnt quite a bit of bad Italian from her, however.

MyLord has no particular reputation at present
In the Metro, back in the UK, it seems every 10th word is a rude word. I really don't know what's happened to editorial standards, but they really should improve. Maybe I'm just being old fashioned or something. Hmmm, where are my slippers...

Yeees, I'm all too familiar with the wet, open mouth eating syndrome through a friend's children, who enjoyed a good slobber through their food, to the extent I tried to bribe them to set up a home cream cracker bakery, to no avail (just my little joke).
Anyway after a while I got over it. But God help them when they go shopping for a partner when they're older. "Darling, lets go out for a nice brrrupppppuuuhhhssssllsss meal"

Re: I got Fed up with my Family Speaking with Food in there Mouth And swearing

Just some random observations:

> you can really be nasty, hurtful and wounding without resorting to any racial or religious epithets or resorting to swear words (if that is what you wish to do...)
> Traditional swear words (the usual Anglo-Saxon epithets like the "F Word" the "C word" etc.) should be used like a Michelin starred chef uses seasoning: sparingly, at the right moment and for maximum effect
> It has been said that, traditionally, swear words focus on sex and sexual organs in Anglo Saxon countries, on the organs of and the act of defecation and urination in Germany speaking countries and on religion and religious icons in the Latin countries.

The problem with the word "shit" (a vulgarity as opposed to a swear word, apparently) is that it's so useful... George Carlin has a great monologue on its' use...
One of my favourite lines from this monologue goes along the lines of "some people say that when a person goes crazy he goes ape shit, other people say he's gone bananas - but hey folks Ape shit IS bananas"
