Re: Pregnant with twins

Thanks for all of the advice! I get along pretty well with my parents, but my mom definitely has her opinions. At the same time, so do I, and I'm not shy about letting her know "my kids my rules", so there could be some... exchange of opinion. My dad is a pretty good mediator though, and they are reasonable in not wanting to be a source of stress for us.

I have the feeling that my mom will be very helpful though, particularly on the kitchen/food/cleaning front, and it would afford us a bit of freedom in getting a few hours here and there for ourselves (if only to sleep). Our place isn't huge, but we have a separate second bedroom with a door that closes that we would put them in. We also live in an area that is very residential. Most people tell us some help is better than no help.

We're trying to save up some money for upcoming expenses like krippe/diapers/etc... I can imagine that our nerves will be tested (to say the least) but I think that sucking up any temporary inconvenience might be ok. It is a good point to think about how long we want them to stay around. These will be my parents' only grandchildren, so they are willing to set up camp for months if we want, but I'm not so sure about that. I guess we have to see how it is to handle our girls.

37 week checkup and no signs of arrival yet!

Re: Pregnant with twins

I realise that this is kind of an old thread, but I am expecting twins at the end of February and would love to meet some other moms-to-be in the same situation. I am in Schaffhausen but can get to Zürich pretty easily. Did anyone find a group for twin moms or be interested in meeting up?

Re: Pregnant with twins

Hi All

Congratulations on your pregnancies! I have just found out that I am expecting twins in August (still very early days of course but I have everything crossed).

I have also been searching for twin or multiple groups and I have found this one i German http://www.zwillingseltern.ch

If you guys do get together for some twin meet ups I would love to get back in touch when things get a bit closer for me - I know I will need lots of your advice and it would be good to know there was an English speaking group too.

Good luck with your pregnancies everyone. x

Our twins arrived on 30th December 2014; the final and record breaking set of twins born at the Inselspital in Bern (101 pairs in 2014 apparently).

Congratulations on both their arrival and on having time to post on English Forum to tell us about it!

I hope they and you are doing well.

Re: Pregnant with twins

Hi everyone,

I think there must be something in the water because I also found out that I am expecting twins, due in late August!

Definitely keen to meet up with others, as I think support will be very much needed! Now that the shock has subsided, I am starting to get excited, but as we have a son already, this means we will have 3 children, which wasn't quite the plan, but hey, it's an amazing surprise!!

I live in Canton Solothurn, in-between Basel and Zurich, and I get the feeling I am not near many other English-speakers, but if anyone wants to get in touch, please do so!

Kind regards,
Sam

Congrats to all pregnant mommies here!
Could anyone suggest a good book on raising twins? Either paperback or online version, or both. Babyhood is essential in this particular research.

I owned about eight of these books (bought them secondhand, as a bundle), read them obsessively while I was on hospital bedrest last spring, and... haven't touched any of them since my twins were born. Largely because I haven't had time, but I also haven't felt the need. YMMV of course.

Most of them tend toward a sort of well-meaning alarmism. You should consider hiring a night nanny! and a cleaner! Shop online for everything, that way you don't have to shower or leave the house! Your partner must take several weeks off and help with night feeds, there is no way to do it alone! Take turns staying home with the babies while the other one goes grocery shopping! Be prepared to interview lots of pediatricians until you find one who really understands twins! Above all, SLEEP NOW while you have the chance!

All of this may be perfectly sound advice if your circumstances permit it. If they don't (as mine didn't) then it quickly becomes overwhelming.

One book I do remember as a welcome exception to this pattern was "Twinspiration" by Cheryl Lage. She spent most of the book talking about practical logistics - how do you get two babies down the stairs and into the car? how do you maneuver a twin buggy through a revolving door, or an airlock-style set of double doors? I've forgotten all the specifics but what I remember is her refreshingly can-do attitude. She just took it for granted that of course you'd be leaving the house with these babies, probably as often as you could! Her attitude to nannies/cleaners/grandparents was similarly laid-back and reassuring: if you've got help of whatever sort available, sure, take advantage of it. If not, don't worry. You'll get into a rhythm and you'll be fine.

So if you're going to buy a twin-babies book, hers is the one I would recommend.

You really don't need to buy any of them though. Twin babies are just babies: they need pretty much the same stuff as any other babies. Milk, diapers, attention. Love.

Re: Pregnant with twins

Congratulations! My twin girls are now 3 and it is a lot of fun. I love being a mother to twins but that is not to say that it has been an easy ride. They were born at 29 weeks from an unexplained preterm labour but it has had no impact.
There is some great advice above. So from my experience, I'd encourage you to be prepared early.
I was in Edinburgh for the first couple of years where there is a great twin club and found it invaluable to have insights to what lay ahead and to meet other expectant parents as we supported each other through the craziness. I ran a few of their sessions for expectant parents to help them prepare practically and emotionally (if that is possible!).
I hope you find some other expectant Mums but if you need any advice, please send me a message.
Good luck!

I recommend this as a pregnancy read:
http://www.amazon.com/Double-Trouble.../dp/0007153988

This as a practical bible:
Mothering Multiples -
http://www.amazon.com/Mothering-Mult.../dp/0976896931

I also read the Gina Ford one for an outline of routine but went for a relaxed interpretation!

I also enjoyed reading "French Children don't throw food" in the first year.

Good luck!

Re: Pregnant with twins

Hi
Congratulations!
Twins are hard work in the beginning but really rewarding and great fun!
Totally agree with last post - dont change anything that works, do what works for you and try not to get to hung up on jobs that aren't essential - there's plenty of time for those later - life's too short. If someone offers a helping hand, grab it.
The help you will need depends upon your own circumstances obviously but I woukd recommed making sure help is available if you need it.
Good luck and enjoy!

Re: Pregnant with twins

Just found out that my wife (31) is expecting twins -- our first time going through this process, making it somewhat overwhelming/exciting/scary!

As we are quite new to Zurich (we live in Thalwil), our network is still slowly building. So if you are an expecting mum who would love to meet my wife, then please send me a PM, or if you want to hangout as a couple, that would be great also!

I think I also once saw on this forum a meetup for expectant mums - is that still the case?

Hi Sam, I'm also pregnant with twins, with an EDD of October 8! I live in Canton Bern but close to Erlach and Neuchâtel. I'm pretty busy right now, about to go to France for Easter, then the US for a week, and I also work PT in Lucerne and study at the Uni. But I can always find time for a meet-up with other English-speaking preggo women!

Congrats, twins are a blast Ours were born in January 2014. We are in Kilchberg. I would be happy to get in touch, maybe we can exchange some twin handling howtos.

Best

Re: Pregnant with twins

Hi all, happy to have stumbled onto this thread as I'm expecting twin girls within the year. EDD for 40 weeks would be December 21, but Dr says there is no way they'll be in that long.

I'm in the Langnau (Zurich) area and would be happy to hear from or meet up with other new or soon to be twin-moms.

If you have any tips about preparing for the birth, I'm very curious about your experiences. I've been under close observation (weekly visits) at Uni-Spital Zurich, but the thought of giving both there is less than appealing. If you have alternate ideas or can set my mind at ease, please get in touch.

Thanks for sharing all your stories in the above thread!

Re: Pregnant with twins

Quick update - apologies if someone already mentioned this earlier, but

Switzerland has a Twins group with info, meet-ups, and other events:

www.zwillingsfamily.ch

Most of the info on their site is only accessible once you have a membership which I understand is 40 CHF / year.
