Possibly. He might decide to prescribe a different drug, or insist that you pursue a different line of treatment. That's his professional prerogative.

What's more important is that you have enough of the medicines you were previously prescribed to last you until you see your new doctor. Do you?

Only if the doctor here believes it is appropriate, after doing the necessary tests to see what your current diabetes, etc, status is. Because that is the only safe way to do this. Even in England, if you go to a new doctor and you do not have recent tests showing your current status and Hba1c, they won't automatically prescribe any drugs previously prescribed- if they are any good at their job.

Edit, ooops post crossed DB.

You go to a pharmacy, or 'apotheke' in German. They have a green cross outside them. Not sure if they will supply a drug that's not been prescribed by a doctor in Switzerland, though?

But as a diabetic, why are you not concerned about seeing a doctor so that you can check that your diabetes is under control?

Please do not take metformin, or any prescription drug without medical supervision.

OMG - we have returned to the plot!!!

Assuming you have run out, or are running out of your current prescription, and have a repeat prescription, you should see your own doctor in Switzerland - the doctor will then decide whether you need a new prescription and for what drug. He will then write a prescription.

You can then take the prescription to the pharmacy, they will complete it and you will be required to pay for the drugs. You then submit the receipt to your health insurance for reimbursement.

If you have enough tablets to last until you see the doctor then there's no problem. Just hold onto the UK prescription and show it to the doctor next week.

If you don't have enough the you need to take your prescription into the pharmacy here and explain the situation. In this case they may be prepared to fill it for you as an emergency case.

I'd be surprised. Metformin had been around for a long time and is considered safe even though it has some serious side effects if not taken properly or not controlled.

Metformin can control weight gain and help with weigh loss in people who has glucose intolerance. But it's hardly a diet pill.

It's prescribed for diabetes, pre-diabetes, PSOC and gestational diabetes. Not for weight loss.

You need a prescription in Switzerland and you should get regular checks to make use you don't fall into a coma or something.
You're right. I'm mixing up with Mediator, as my friend Google just confirmed.

But you said you don't pay for your insulin. Insulin is only used to treat type one diabetes ( or in rare instances to murder people) so the assumption is that you have type one diabetes.
Not really rocket science is it?
You are wrong... Sorry.

If the diabetes type 2 is not under control and the pancreas is destroyed, the person will need insulin injection. I have an uncle who screwed up his diabetes type 2 badly, is fat and doesn't control is diet and body well who needs to inject insulin twice a day.

Glucophage ( or metformin as they like to call it over here) is used to treat type 2 diabetes but insulin is used for type 1 and occasionally for type 2 but only if other drugs have not worked effectively. Drug treatment and not insulin would be the first line of attack in treating type 2 diabetes.

As I am married to a doctor and have a degree in biomedical sciences and a masters in biochemistry I don't actually need to google it thank you.

I can see why they won't supply as standard in CH. I always have had prescriptions written in German from CH filled in both France & England without issue. I explain it's a repeat prescription valid for 12 months & voila! It's not as complicated as people think

Let me get this straight, you're on insulin for type one diabetes and have been prescribed glucophage which is essentially used for type 2 diabetes?

You really need to be seeing a specialist endocrinologist if this is the case, your metabolism is clearly in a pretty bad way.
Insulin is often used to help metformin work more efficiently in Type2, if hba1c is not well controlled and insulin resistant stage if passed. Possibly though, what OP means that Metformin is prescribed to fight insulin resistance?

Or a troll, perhaps?

My father is the same... developed type 2 diabetes and was told to control his diet and it should normalise. Didn't do that and moved to pills. Still continued to ignore his doctors advice (after being minutes away from a diabetic coma) and has since moved onto insulin. He last week came out of hospital after having a heart attack. Hopefully this is enough to scare him into action.

Re: Diet pills

I am actually quite impressed how well she is sticking to her "I have type diabetes" statement - and denying she is a fatty chub chub.

Especially in light of her second post "I just wanted to know really what any were called and if anyone had tired them to see if they actually work"

Sorry I didn't phrase that post correctly. I should have said that insulin is used as the primary treatment for type one and would not be used for type 2 until other treatments had failed.

The OP gives the impression that she was already taking insulin and the doctor prescribed her metformin. That would be the wrong way round for normal treatment if she only has type two.

The two 'drugs' work in completely different ways.

A troll, I am not sure... But she seems definitely like a teenager the way she talks and she seems more like someone who indeed wants diet pills.

If you were diabetic, you would be asking a doctor about these tablets, and I'm certain you wouldn't be referring to them as diet pills.
