[Zurich] Endocrinologist for Hair Loss

Hello,

My wife's hair is falling down pretty intensely for a week and we are both worried.

I know how to find endocrinologists using the web but are looking for personal recommendations. Anyone on this forum has a recommendation ?

Thanks in advance.

Has she recently given birth ?

Have you asked your house doctor about it ?

I would expect that the house doctor can begin investigations as well as make a referral.

Re: [Zurich] Endocrinologist for Hair Loss

Hi there,

Could it be stress related?
I am female and recently lost a ridiculous amount of hair over a few weeks (it is so thin right now (and was thin/fine to begin with!), but slowly growing back in) due to stress. Clumps were going down the drain in the shower, I would wake up in the mornings with hair all over my pillows etc..
It was quite depressing. I had to de-stress myself mentally (which can be really hard). My husband also found this shampoo and conditioner by
L'Oreal to help strengthen hair...I use it now and it seems to help...but that could just be me thinking it does (does that make sense?).
I hope your wife's hair loss problem resolves itself soon for her, I know how depressing it can be and hard on your self imagine.

Re: [Zurich] Endocrinologist for Hair Loss

Thank you both. We have a baby and she is 18 months old. A little late for baby related hair loss and she did lose a ton of hair 12 or so months ago.

Stress might be a reason. But I would rather be proactive and check if everything else is ok, like ferritin and the hormones. If you have a recommendation, that will be great.

Thanks.

I am sorry for what your wife is facing, hair loss can be really stressing specially for women. I would try to find a dermatologist rather than an endocrinologist but first of all talk to your GP. He will know where to refer you

Re: [Zurich] Endocrinologist for Hair Loss

I just wanted to write a follow up, since I have recently found out what actually has been causing my hair loss, and thought since it is very common for women to have this, it might be worth looking into for your wife (if the issue is still there).
Turns out my major hair loss has been due to a large cyst on one of my ovaries. This can cause hormonal issues, causing an almost male pattern baldness effect (all over, not in the usual way) for some women. Apparently cysts on the ovaries are quite common and most go away on their own, and all will regulate itself out again hormonally. Some do have to be removed surgically though.
Just thought this might help you, or someone else going through something similar.
I know it's "just hair", but it can be a really hard thing to go through.
best,

Re: [Zurich] Endocrinologist for Hair Loss

Thanks for sharing JustBean, this is very helpful.

I also have been worried as my hair is thinning a lot and i am in the process of doing a hormonal test to check that everything is in balance.

Glad you got the problem diagnosed, and hope everything returns to normal for you

Hello all,

Thanks for all your sharing. Do you think cysts in breasts could cause the same hair loss?
Would like to hear some thoughts.

Re: [Zurich] Endocrinologist for Hair Loss

The internet is not really a place for diagnosis. Best to speak to your doctor and they can help you to decide whether you need a gynaecologist, endocrinologist, or some other specialist.

That said, benign breast cysts can be checked by ultrasound by a gynaecologist, and are usually uncomfortable due to monthly hormonal cycles. Hair loss can also be hormonally related (eg. male-pattern baldness). But there are other things (Thyroid, nutritional deficiencies, allergies, immune problems, genetics) that also affect hair. Hair loss is a 'symptom' of something else going on.
