Schooling for kids with special needs

Can anyone advise or assist me in this regard. We are thinking about moving to Switzerland (area undecided at this point) but would like to know if there are schools who specialise in supporting kids with special needs?

My daughter (6 and half) is at a special school in Cape Town currently for kids who are on the ADDH - spectrum (high functioning disorder).

How does the schooling system in Switzerland manage or cope with kids who have special needs?

Am very keen to hear views and opinions and also suggestions to explore.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Marlene
I'm afraid that I can't give you too much info on your question. However, I think that in the state system in Kanton Zurich they are tending towards reducing the smaller SEN classes and moving towards including all children with SEN's into mainstream classes with SEN teachers working through team teaching in the classroom with the class teacher.
You could try going on this forum http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Swiss-Schooling/ as they should be able to give you more information.
Hope that helps and good luck

Re: Schooling for kids with special needs

Hi Marlene.

I am actually living in Bern. I finished my studies in Psychopedagogy with honours in 2008, degree specialized in learning problems and development disorders. I had been working for two years in the treatment of an Autistic kid, given fully in English . I was full trainned in the ABA programme in Australia in July 2009.

There are some institutes which help parents to look for specialists which can accompany your child in the school.

For further information you can contact me by a forum PM.

Re: Schooling for kids with special needs

We are also a family potentially moving to Zurich with three kids, our eldest son is nearly 8 (sept birthday) and has mild autism. We would love to be contacted by any tutors in the area that would consider help him settling into a local school. Many thanks, Judy

Dear Marlene,
Depending where you are moving to there is a great school near Geneva called Oakhill which specializes in helping children with dyslexia and ADHD. It is a part time programme and the children attend international schools in the region and go to Oak Hill half the day for bespoke assistance in small classes of one teacher to 4 children. www.oakhill.ch

Mod Edit: The poster is related to Oakhill
