Re: Which hospital for giving birth??

For me the upgrade in Unispital seems quite a lot, specially considering that they do not guarantee you a room (they are quite full and they will bump you if someone comes along with the right insurance). Their communal rooms are for 8 people, so if I'd stayed there I don't think I would be able to sleep

Although, I've never heard of Nitrous Oxide for pain relief during birth, that sounds like fun!

Re: Which hospital for giving birth??

8 people - and the upgrade is expensive indeed compared to Triemli, but on the other hand I like the idea of the availability of a gentler form of pain relief than an epidural... decisions!!! Luckily Im due only in November, that means until September or so to make one

Hospital upgrade costs: This link states which hospitals offer it and how much they charge.

Re: Which hospital for giving birth??

Interesting that (according to the article) Spital Zollikerberg offers a complete Klassenwechsel, the possibility to upgrade both medical care and accommodation.

Here in SZ my experience has been that one may only (try to) upgrade accommodation but not the level of medical care.

I couldn't care less what type of room I stay in, but I would gladly pay to be treated by a senior doctor - especially when facing complicated surgery.

"Doc, I'd like to have a senior doctor perform this surgery."
"Do you have the corresponding supplementary insurance?"
"No, but I would gladly pay the difference."
"Unfortunately, you need to have supplementary insurance for that, you can't opt to pay the difference."
"I couldn't get supplementary because [insert your reason], but again, I'd offer to pay. Would you give me a quote, please?"
"Well, that's too bad."

I know this is an older post from last year, but where is the information about 8-bed rooms at the unispital from? I've given birth twice at unispital ZH on basic insurance. The public ward has three bed rooms, and where possible they keep the middle bed empty (both of my stays this was the case), so in effect you have two bed rooms. Though of course if very busy (as some one else commented they have been lately) that could change.

And yes they do have nitrous oxide (gas and air) upon request, though it is not commonly available in Switzerland (very common in the UK!).

Re: Which hospital for giving birth??

I gave birth at Unispital (Zürich) in 2013 with basic insurance only (Grundversicherung). I was in a two-bed room, without a shower (there were showers across the corridor).

Re: Which hospital for giving birth??

we are going to give birth at the Triemlispital soon.
with the basic insurance they put you in a 3-beds-room. but it should be easy to get the upgrade paying around 100 CHF per night.

You should double check that because my friend recently gave birth there with basic insurance and had to pay a 1500 CHF deposit for a private room with no guarantee they would get it. They didn't so they were refunded.

Are the babies kept in the same room as the moms?

Re: Which hospital for giving birth??

I recently gave birth in Zurich unispital and it was really wonderful experience. The midwife and nurses are really supportive. Obviously facilities are good. Yes, as mentioned you get laughing gas for pain relief though it didn't help much is what I felt. Only drawback I felt is room upgrade to single is really expensive when compared to tremli spital. I would say for normal birth expecting no compilations tremli would do because your husband could stay overnight if in single room. Zurich unispital is best in its way !!

Re: Which hospital for giving birth??

Does anyone know if there is a website or somewhere that rates the hospitals with quality or what they offer? For me it could be in English or German. My wife and I are also trying to decide. Right now we are leaning toward Zolikerberg just because we know more people that went there and they were happy with it. We also just have basic insurance.
