Which Zurich coffee houses are accessible for duo strollers (BESIDES Starbucks)?

Dear fellow mothers of twins!

As a mother of new born twins I suddenly realized that most coffee houses/ restaurants are not accessible anymore due to my duo stroller! The place might be child friendly, but the door is simply too narrow!! What Zurich places do you have on your list? I am not a big fan of Starbucks, so this option is out of question.

Thanks a lot! Flurina

If it's a side-by-side, it should have the same dimensions as a wheelchair, and therefore be able to go anywhere a wheelchair can. (PDF)

We found the Kennedy's pub (behind the Europaallee) to be very accommodating indeed. The restaurant at the Viadukt is quite spacious too.

Also, think about changing facilities - they can be a bigger problem than space. I'm afraid I can't help you much there, though, as we rarely leave our little valley.

This. Restrooms don't always have changing tables, and are often located up or down a flight of stairs, or have very little room to maneuver a stroller inside. Certainly you can't take it into a stall with you. So (a) carry a changing mat with you and use the lid of the toilet as your flat surface to put it on; (b) always go for coffee with a friend. She can watch the stroller and one baby while you disappear off to change the other one. Come back, swap babies, repeat.

In a pinch I suspect you could probably ask staff to keep an eye on the second baby for you for five minutes, if he/she is sleeping peacefully in the buggy and if it's a quiet time of day. I've never had to do it yet but that would be my plan if I had to change my twins in, say, Migros: go to the information desk, explain the situation and ask if I can leave the stroller behind the counter with them while I take one baby at a time off to be changed.

Have a look at the "Gemeinschaftszentrum" next to you www.gz-zh.ch . Most of them have cafes/little restaurants.

Re: Which Zurich coffee houses are accessible for duo strollers (BESIDES Starbucks)?

The coffee is awful and the food only ok but try the 3rd floor cafe at Jemoli. The lifts are wide, plenty of room to manoeuvre your buggy around the tables, lots of highchairs, pretty good change room (ask for key) and I always felt comfortable breast feeding ina quiet corner. Don't go at lunchtime as its always packed and no room even without a buggy. But if you go early morning or late afternoon there are only ever a few old ladies or other mums around both of which are happy to offer a few words to entertain your kids.

Thank you all! I see there is need for improvement in the Zurich coffehouse scene. After all, mothers (including TWIN mothers) are frequent and loyal customers...

Slightly off topic here - Flurina which stroller do you have for your twins?

Good question and not off topic at all! I didn't realize until I'd encountered a few other twin moms out and about, but it turns out my stroller (an old beat-up Mountain Buggy) is several centimeters narrower than most of the other side-by-sides I've seen. In particular, it is a lot narrower than the TFK Twinner Twist which seems to be one of the standard choices here. If you have one of those, take Dougal's Breakfast's advice about 'going anywhere a wheelchair can' with a generous pinch of salt. It's still worth a try - wheelchair-accessible places will generally be a better bet for you than non-wheelchair-accessible - but by no means guaranteed.

My tip: get a woven wrap (or other baby carrier of choice) and keep it in the buggy at all times. In a pinch, you can wear one twin, carry the other and ditch the stroller just inside the entrance, at the bottom of the lift or wherever. Also handy for taking them both off to be changed at once, say if you're out on your own and the restroom is up or down a flight of stairs.

Oh, and it's not exactly a coffeehouse, but the Coop restaurant at St. Annahof (Rennweg tram stop) has a play area right at the back which seems to be popular with moms of babies too. Lots of tummy time happening on the tables. I was there yesterday with my two, and as we were leaving, a pair of old ladies in the normal part of the restaurant stopped me to tell me we were the third set of twins they'd seen there that afternoon.

Re: Which Zurich coffee houses are accessible for duo strollers (BESIDES Starbucks)?

we use a chariot captain, and so happy with the choice as it's big and can carry a lot of shopping and the suspension is fab. but then we don't own a car so we don't often have to fold it up.

migros and coop restaurants i found are often good as they always have all the facilities such as changing tables and also high chairs, which will become important before you know it. their lifts are also always big enough. around these parts they also have a play area, same applies as to high chairs.

congrats on the twins! hard work but such fun!

Thanks for the stroller info, will google a bit now. Am wary of a double stroller as have visions of me getting stuck in a tram door, we thinking of the city select double (something something-sorry the name completely went out of my head!)

Hi! Father of twins here (11 weeks!)

On the stroller topic, we got a Mountain Buggy Duet as it was our only option. 63cm wide and, amazingly, fits in our tiny lift (70cm wide).

On the Cafe topic, we went to the Metropol this week and it worked out fine. As it's the season of Christmas markets, we've tended to stop a lot at outdoor Cafes too. The one at the Bürkliplatz market is very nice.

Double strollers take the place of a table for two. That's why there's so little choice for frequent and loyal Mammies; you're just not frequent nor loyal enough to justify the real estate costs. Nor do you order alcohol and most cafés need the supplementary income from drinkers of the good stuff.

Annoying, but not the fault of the coffeehouse 'scene'.

Is that because the entrance is too narrow for your double-buggy?

OP - we had a double but front & back - so long and narrow. If not too late, consider this...

We've used a Jane (front & back) and then a TFK (side-by-side). One work of caution, with double buggies get one with a wheel in each corner at the front - especially important to avoiding embarrasing "tip-overs" when getting in and out of trams...

Well, if you are going to be snobby about SB, that's the price you pay. I wasn't a fan. Then I had kids. All of a sudden the coffee house with the helpful, polite, smiling staff, who were happy to warm kids drinks, provide kiddy portions, was non-smoking (way back not so long ago...) and had comfy seats became a favourite. Sure, I don't go there when I'm alone, but when you have kids and your options become more limited, those places that cater to you become more interesting options.

If you get a side-by-side, you'll be fine on the low-floor trams. Stick with those and don't attempt the others: even the door at the back with the buggy symbol on it is too narrow in my experience.

If you get a tandem, the non-low-floor trams might become an option since a tandem is usually no wider than a single stroller. The downside of course is that the extra length makes them harder to maneuver round tables in a cafe, and difficult or impossible to jam into small residential-type lifts.

I would suggest Tibbits, very spacious and relaxed. One note on Starbucks...they are not particularly pram friendly...though some of their customers are and have helped getting the pram up the myriad of stairs in both the branch in central and opposite HB.
