Mrs giving birth end of April - told we're already late on hospital pick?

So we're expecting a baby boy end of April. Today, the mrs was told by her gyn that we need to give her the name of the hospital she would like to give birth in ASAP (basic insurance). According to her, we're already late and there can be waiting lists. Really?!

Does seem strange that there can be waiting lists for giving birth.

A major university hospital can't refuse you. A smaller public one can be full the day you give birth and send you to the university one. But there's no waiting list, it's on first come first served basis.

There might be a waiting list for the birth preparation class though, if you wish to attend one.

There will always be some hospital where you can give birth- even through A&E if necessary- but not necessarily the place you choose with the obstetrician you choose or the midwife you choose. Many birth clinics are private, and you need to book in advance- of course baby comes when baby comes, and if registered with them, they will take you in.

Yes, that was my assumption as well. I just thought I missed something on how things go here as it's our first child and talking with colleagues etc. gave me the impression most women seem to have a semi-private or private insurance rather than the base insurance.

Re: Mrs giving birth end of April - told we're already late on hospital pick?

I had my third daughter last April here in Zurich at Unispital (on basic insurance). You should know that there's a bit of a baby boom going on here, and though they won't refuse you, Unispital did have days last year where they were forced to send women out to Winterthur

In any case, it isn't dependent on when you register with the hospital, in agreement with what has been stated on this thread. However, it is worth asking around at different hospitals, since I was specifically told that the Zurich city hospitals don't coordinate with each other, so over a period of weeks Unispital could be very busy and Triemli could be nearly empty.

One good thing about having a busy hospital-you may get bumped up to the half-private recovery ward (Wochenbett)
