Re: Would you toss them?

Well, I don't think there's much risk of anyone going thru the rubbish bin to steal anything this week as there are used tampons & 2 packets of prawns that were passed their date.

Re: Would you toss them?

Thanks for the giggles - I really didn't eat salmon mousse I wouldn't be here to tell you if I had, would I?

As mentioned, I only had water with the mash. But as I probably puked everything I've eaten in the past few days up this morning and all's well now, I believe it probably indeed was some one-timer bug that took it's time waiting to pounce, decided to pounce yesterday and keep pouncing until it had emptied me out 110%, and now it decided that it doesn't like me anymore because I scared it away with ginger and honey tea, so it disappeared

Mash has been tossed and I've decided to bake the leftover potatoes with oil and garlic this weekend, so any possible bug will be baked right out

Thanks all!

Re: Would you toss them?

I agree that it may have been a GI bug (virus) that you caught and conquered within a short period of time. This happens a lot.

But, I also want to point out that most cases of food poisoning are caused by the cooks themselves. Poor hygiene, improper storage and/or preparation of food at home, causes far more cases of food borne illness than consuming food past its sell by or best before dates. These dates can be somewhat arbitrary and are based on quality guarantees rather than a decrease in safety. This isn't to say that you shouldn't use common sense about food spoilage, but most every home cook I know doesn't actually practice all the hygiene standards considered necessary by health authorities for a home kitchen. (Obviously, the level of rigor is increased for commercial and industrial kitchens.) If I'm honest, I also probably belong in this category, even though I know better.

Trust me, you would have known if you had eaten solanine in your mash because you would have tasted it. It's very bitter, and the potatoes don't mash well at all. So like you said, the source of your worship of the porcelain goddess was probably just a circulating bug that you ingested via the more mundane forms of exposure and is not likely to be a result of "overdue" food.

Re: Would you toss them? [sprouting potatoes]

Interestingly, I had a Swiss neighbor over the other day while I was cooking and was peeling my sprouty potatoes and she told me that I shouldn't use them...we'd all be sick. Luckily, i had a newer bag. I had never heard this but didn't want to risk a sick mommy and two toddlers!
