Not 'real' flu then, just 'man flu'.

That's so true. I've had flu twice in my life. Once when I was a child and once as an adult. It may have been once or twice more perhaps

The rest of the times, including many times with a high fever have really just been colds.

With a cold you may feel you can't get up out of bed. With flu you can't get out of bed.

.....i'm bitterly regretting my decision not to delay the trip, sitting here in Beijing sweating buckets after an uncomfortble flight.Should have listned more to the doc, but yesterday i was feeling sort of ok.

So maybe a bit more than "man flu" although not sure if it's real flu, certainly feels like it.

A bad cold then. You wouldn't have been able to drag yourself onto the plane at all if you had proper flu.

Hope you get better soon- but I do feel sorry for all the people who probalby caught your cold on the flight (nothing ruins a long haul flight like sitting next to someone who is sweating with a fever and coughing and spluttering....).

There is no big money to be made our of herbals- as you can't patent a natural product. So who is going to spend money on double-blind testing, etc. Of course many traditional medicines are based on 'herbs' - aspirin from birch bark, digitalis from foxgloves and many more. And to be fair, most strong side-effects are well-known and warned against, like sensitivity to light/sun when using St John's wort (very effective in depression for many people- as confirmed in double blind testing) for instance.

Very different to homeopathy, as already said.
You can patent the use of a natural product for particular medical purposes if you can identify the active ingredient, and many millions are spent on doing just this. So much so, that the World Intellectual Property Organisation in Geneva has proposed a new kind of intellectual property registration (provisionally called Traditional Knowledge, or TK), to protect folklore remedies against unbridled exploitation by Big Pharma. This kind of register already exists in some countries. India, for example, has a huge registry (a lot of mumbo-jumbo, but probably the odd priceless gem as well).
