Swiss efficiency

Got a bit of flu and was planning to travel tomorrow to Asia, this evening doubtful if I'll go but I need a medical cert for the insurance claim on part of the travel.

Phoned up at 17.30hrs appointment with Médecin de Garde at 18.30 hrs, which is 12km away, she saw me on time, 15 minutes consultation, few pills and a medical cert, round to the pharmacie (open until 20.00hrs) picked up some pills and a homeopathic remedy, back home (12km away) by 19.20hrs.

Job done in less than an hour; i've got nothing to complain about the medical service here (i have the cheapest insurance, view i rarely use it)

Flu is a virus… NOTHING is going to help apart from your bodies immune system and possibly anti-viral drugs.

Quite likely, but Dafalgen will take some of the muscular and head pains away....I presume, although i am not yet converted, homeopathic stuff boosts the immune system somehow.

Re: Swiss efficiency

In Switzerland, it is not unusual to see herbal remedies mislabelled as "homeopathic" remedies.

Personally, I prefer proper chemicals tested on kittens, but I'm happy to acknowledge that some herbal remedies might not be entirely useless.

And as they haven't been through the proper clinical trials and vetting, some herbal remedies may have unpleasant side effects or be actually dangerous.

Re: Swiss efficiency

There is no big money to be made our of herbals- as you can't patent a natural product. So who is going to spend money on double-blind testing, etc. Of course many traditional medicines are based on 'herbs' - aspirin from birch bark, digitalis from foxgloves and many more. And to be fair, most strong side-effects are well-known and warned against, like sensitivity to light/sun when using St John's wort (very effective in depression for many people- as confirmed in double blind testing) for instance.

Very different to homeopathy, as already said.

This is the part I agree with, not the testing on kittens.

Quote:
In 1995, the total turnover of nonprescription-bound herbal medicines in pharmacies was equal to almost 30% of the total turnover of nonprescription-bound medicines in Germany, and in the United States, the annual retail sales of herbal products was estimated to be US$5.1 billion. In India, herbal medicine is a common practice, and about 960 plant species are used by the Indian herbal industry, of which 178 are of a high volume, exceeding 100 metric tons per year (Sahoo 2010). In China, the total value of herbal medicine manufactured in 1995 reached 17.6 billion Chinese yuan (approximately US$2.5 billion; Eisenberg et al. 1998; WHO 2001). This trend has continued, and annual revenues in Western Europe reached US$5 billion in 2003-2004 (De Smet 2005). In China, sales of herbal products totaled US$14 billion in 2005, and revenue from herbal medicines in Brazil was US$160 million in 2007 (World Health Organization; http://www.who.int/topics/traditional_medicine/en/). It is estimated that the annual worldwide market for these products approached US$60 billion (Tilburt and Kaptchuk 2008).
