Don't encourage them!

Next they'll be telling us how all their best friends are black/Jewish/gay or whatever.

Validation by association: it's the thoroughly modern way to demonstrate your virtue!
Actually, in my case at least, it was to point out that kids do no have an innate problem with knowing Transsexuals rather than anything else. Hence my post was all about how my daughter never had any issues with my friend and just sees her as another person and never needed my to explain anything. And to imply that parents shouldn't wait until they are ready to explain peoples differences (if you ever will be) but rather take each situation as it comes and embrace the rich mixture of people that is humanity.

Re: Transexual as a coach

Yes, I totally get that.

For the bacon, problem is for those not so long out of the UK, is that it is one of those dodgy pub jokes, I think first coined by Al Murray the beer drinking 'comedian'- how do you recognize a terrorist at the airport: 'buy him a bacon sarny'.

So good to know PPG was not thinking about that one at all when he posted. But I've heard that one said so many times by people of dubious character, so ...

You know Al Murray's on your side of the political fence?

I'd respond if I could understand a word of what you are saying.
I thought it was quite clear, barring one typo, but I suppose if you're not familiar with the terminology that's at least consistent with your other posts where you seem to believe that people are inventing their TG[1] friends, i.e. that you don't actually know much about the subject.

[1] Transgender - the blanket term most widely-used in discussions of these subjects.

You are confusing my posts with those of Greenmount. I have never made any such claims. Try reading my posts again, but this time sober.

Except many trans people do not like the term transgender because they did not change their gender, rather they changed their physical apperance and hormones to match their gender.

Re: Transexual as a coach

One EF member actually met one of my TG friend a couple of years back- before I knew her well. Sadly she talked to his partner as she heard her speak English and asked where she came from- and she told her 'go away and don't talk to me you sad pervert'. We discussed this recently and it caused a lot of hurt.

You may want to rewrite that so it clear who called who the sad pervert. My first reading suggested it that was the TG who called the EF member a sad pervert - which although almost certainly true, it is a bit harsh

Re: Transexual as a coach

To me the OP's replies in this thread sound like he is still thinking through some of this stuff himself. Am I OK with this person having any contact with my daughter at all, if not what are my exact reasons why not, and would I be more OK or less OK if my daughter were younger, if my daughter were older, if I had been told in advance, if the new coach's genital surgery were a fait accompli, etc. etc.

When you haven't quite hashed out what you think about something - or perhaps haven't squared the way you rationally think, or what you doctrinally believe, with the way your gut feels - it can indeed be pretty hair-raising to realize that you suddenly have to, not only have a solid opinion, but come up with an age-appropriate way of explaining it to your children ASAP.

And so while I agree that there are age-appropriate ways to discuss this with a 10-year-old, at the same time I can thoroughly sympathize with a parent who feels caught off guard by the topic, may not have all his own opinions sorted yet let alone figured out how to present them to his child, and who naively thought he would have a couple more years to figure it out.

What I remember appreciating the most as a kid is when adults found a way to be honest with me about their own conflicted feelings. Kids pick up on that stuff anyway no matter how well you think you're hiding it. By being upfront about it, they taught me that it's OK to think one way and feel another sometimes, that cognitive dissonance is a normal part of the human experience - and to me that's a much more valuable lesson than the specifics of whatever I'd asked them about.

The whole post makes no sense to me.. With all the he and she and his and her etc it's not at all clear who said and did what.

And there we have it: it doesn't matter if some of your best friends are transsexual, gay, black or Jewish. We don't spend long enough alive on this planet to get to know every variation of humanity in order to develop "empathy with their struggle" or whatever. What matters is this:

1) We are surrounded by people who are "strange" to us. Sometimes these people make us feel uncomfortable.

2) They are humans, as we are, therefore it is hurtful to be rude to them.

There. Simple.

Yes, I know. But as far as I'm aware it's still used as the generic term, and to include CDs, TVs, TSs and anyone else that doesn't conform to 'normal' gender identity ideas.

What's wrong with the generic term "people"?

Nothing at all.

Doesn't exactly help though, does it, if you're trying to talk about specific, or even non-specific, sub-groups of those people.

Re: Transexual as a coach

Just to butt in with some science; having a penis does not necessarily mean you are male, nor does its absence mean you are female. There are several well-characterised sex chromosome disorders where the individual is genetically of one gender, yet phenotypically of the other. For example, de la Chappelle syndrome (XX male), Swyer syndrome (XY female), Klinefelter syndrome (XXY), and Androgen-insensitivity syndrome, amongst others.

Now, you can all get back to your LGBT bashing/defending*.

I suppose it works, but sooner or later somebody's going to ask why.

Incidentally, I know some people. They're all lovely. Except the ****s.
