Psychiatric help during pregnancy?

Hi guys,

We are going through a particularly tough pregnancy. Without going into too many details, the news has been pretty much consistantly bad. My partner is suffering and needs someone to talk to. I am doing my best and am there to listen but being totally new to this situation I don't have all the answers. The preganacy forums are too hysterical (and not in a funny way) so we are looking for external help.

She was referred once already by her doctor to a particularly useless psychologist. She doesn't feel like she has a lot of places to turn to, so I'm reaching out to the community to see if anyone has been in a similar situation and knows or can recommend a good psychiatrist / counsellor specialising in maternity issues, preferably through experience.

Please let me know. Thanks

Sorry to hear you are having a tough time.

Do you have a midwife? I know they aren't psychiatrists or counsellors, but a good midwife is a great person to be able to talk to about issues and concerns and who can often offer practical advice.

Sorry I don't know any to recommend in Zurich, but wish you all the best.

Re: Psychiatric help during pregnancy?

Finding a good psychologist/counsellor can be difficult. I suggest speaking to the doctor (GP or Gynaecologist) and asking if they can recommend someone else.

As said, am experienced midwife can make a huge difference. What 'model' of birth are you wanting? all my pregnancies were midwife-managed, and so I had a team of midwives that I saw regularly and could choose from them if I needed extra support.

Pregnancy and parenting websites can be very unhelpful, but there are some very good ones out there.

If the stress relates to a specific condition or illness, you may find there is an online support community specific to that, which should be a lot more helpful.

Antenatal depression and/or anxiety, severe morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidum) are specific medical conditions that need very specific medical treatment...

We don't have a midwife, how do you get one? Is one assigned usually or do you have to find one?

You find one yourself, in ZH I found one here. For insurance cover for care after the birth ('wochenbett') you need to find one in your postal code region. The hebamme in this link (not mine, so I can't recommend her) seems to be specialized in crisis management, maybe worth a try?

Re: Psychiatric help during pregnancy?

I'm not sure you need a psychologist that deals with pregnancy, but one that deals with stress/anxiety/depression or whatever your wife is suffering from.

As you haven't given much info, I'm reading between the lines and guessing your baby has health problems. If your wife is already not coping, maybe things will be harder once the child arrives?? So she needs someone to help her learn to manage stress/anxiety/depression/etc in the long term, not just to deal with pregnancy.

Maybe ask your doctor for a different referral?

Good luck

Re: Psychiatric help during pregnancy?

Maybe your wife just needs to find a better ob/gyn or whoever sent her to a useless therapist. Knowing bedside manners aren't always a priority here, having an ob/gyn one can trust during pregnancy can change the entire situation. Good luck and hang in there!

Re: Psychiatric help during pregnancy?

The Psychologisches Institut at UZH offers many options for pregnancy related issues, listed here:
http://www.psychologie.uzh.ch/fachri...sangebote.html

The Hebammenpraxis Zurich has a list of non psychological options (e.g. Mom support groups, Shiatsu, Pilates etc) :
http://www.hebammenpraxis-zuerich.ch...n-in-z-rich-2/

Let us know if your wife is happy with her OB/Gyn or GP, or whether she would like a recommendation. Wishing you a great deal of strength as you continue to deal with your situation.
