Registering with Doctor in Zurich Upon Arrival

We would like to register with a doctor as soon as we arrive in Zurich. Is there any standard process for doing this or things to be mindful of?

We intend to set our health insurance up as soon as we arrive also. I imagine that we will be selecting the more expensive package where we can chose our practicioners (as we need an English-speaking doctor). I assume this is the only way to guarantee it?

Many thanks for helping.

Re: Registering with Doctor in Zurich Upon Arrival

I have one of the least expensive setups for basic health insurance cover and I can choose my own doctor. The most expensive packages do not guarantee anything or any quality. The basic cover legally is the same for all health insurance providers.

To register with a doctor here, you do just that, select one and register. If you already have your health insurance card, take it with you.

If you do want to save money, first choose your health insurance package. Then see if you have to choose a doctor from a list provided.

I agree. We have only the basic insurance with a 500 franc franchise and we choose our doctor ourselves. Your main problem may be in finding an English speaking doctor. There's a shortage of GP's in Switzerland so you may need to hunt around for a bit before being accepted.

Re: Registering with Doctor in Zurich Upon Arrival

Sorry for jumping on this post with another question but.... I am in the process too of looking for a doctor. Our insurance company have given me a list of doctors that we can register with. There are 5 in our local area and I want to select one that I can communicate with in English, however I cannot seem to get through to any of them on the phone. The numbers provided are always engaged or goes straight through to answer phone (not ideal if I had an emergency). Is there another way? Should I visit in person, will there be a reception desk?? Thanks in advance.

E-mail and ask or go in person. No guarantee that the receptionist will speak English though. "Le docteur parle Anglaise?" should get you a yes or no answer though.

If it is an ansafone you can call back later, they are either closed for the day, closed for lunch or closed for holidays. If it is engaged you should try again later. The number you call to speak to them for general information and appointments is not the same number that you dial if there is a medical emergency.
