Eye exam and prescription lenses [Zürich/Baden]

Hello everyone!

I'm looking to get an eye examination and new lenses for my glasses frames. Vision is getting a bit blurry. I've purchased the supplementary eyecare insurance from Aquilana, and they informed me I'm allowed to use 250CHF every 3 years.

I've done some reading (mainly bad experiences) with people paying a lot of money for an eye examination, which I would like to avoid.

Does anyone have any recommendations for optometrists? Good english speaking ones would be preferred obviously, but I'd like to keep the costs down if possible.

I'm living in Baden but can travel to Zürich area if necessary.

Cheers and thanks in advance!

There are 2 eye doctors in Baden (http://tel.local.ch/en/q?what=augena...Baden&rid=LnKQ ) your health insurance should cover most of the cost. Then take the prescription to Germany and buy your glasses there.

My husband had an eye test at Visilab in Baden.
The optometrist spoke perfect English, the eye test was very straight forward and his new glasses are great!
The exam cost around 50chf.

Re: Eye exam and prescription lenses [Zürich/Baden]

Do you need an eye exam 'just' to address vision, or do you need an exam to look at possible medical issues?

What you need/want would determine whether you should see an Augenarzt (Ophthalmologist) or Optiker (Optometrist).

Both will do a vision test - but the Augenarzt will go beyond that. Obviously an exam from an Augenarzt will be more expensive.

If you are over 50, if you have now or previously had an eye disease, if you are at risk for inherited disease, etc.,, it might be a good idea to get the full monty from an Augenarzt. IMO money well spent is such cases.

But if younger, or if you really only want to address vision correction, starting out with an Optiker is likely a good first step.

By the way, some companies will discount or include the eye exam in the cost of specs if you ultimately buy from them.

Well my vision has gotten worse since I purchased my current glasses (about 2 years ago). I've also started a job that increased my time looking at the computer substantially, so that could be a cause, although I try to take breaks as often as possible.

I'm also moving back home soon where I have much better health insurance coverage, so I'll most likely just live with a better pair of lenses for a short term fix.

Re: Eye exam and prescription lenses [Zürich/Baden]

One reason to have the vision exam done by the Optiker who makes your new specs is that if there are problems with the lens correction it would be down to their work so they need to make it right. If your Rx was done externally you have less negoating room.

I have my vision exam done by the Augenarzt once a year, but I am already seeing him for other issues anyway. When I need new specs I then have the Optiker do an exam and compare the two. But I let the Optiker resolve any differences, and it's his final prescription that is used to make the new specs.

This paid off recently; I had a pair of vari-focals made that proved to be unworkable. As the prescription was developed by the company's Optiker, they changed out the specs at no cost (actually I got a rebate) to me, no argument, they were very helpful finding a workable solution. Their guarantee is very good. (This was Fielmann - don't know if there is one near you, though.)
