A good clinic using Epidural during labor

Hello all!

I am new in Zurich and I am 2 months pregnant, and I just wanted to know if there is a good clinic in the area that uses Epidural anesthesia during labor?

Thank you in advance!

Re: A good clinic using Epidural during labor

I would be surprised if they did not offer it as an option in almost all the hospitals in Switzerland!

There are specific birthing centres or clinics that may not do this procedure, but for a standard hospital it's pretty normal to have this as an option.

It is best to discuss with your doctor, as there are risks involved and the doctor and anaesthetist should be able to talk you through those risks.

Just check to make sure exactly which type of epidural you are getting. I wanted one as well and my hospital in Davos gave me a walking epidural, so it didn't cut the pain as I was expecting. I could have learned this was the standard hospital procedure before I went in, but I just asked about an epidural and didn't speak German well enough to attend the pre-birth class where they told people about it.

Re: A good clinic using Epidural during labor

The majority of 'mainstream' clinics or hospital offer it and only alternative ones do not. But a positive birth experience is about much more than the availability of preferred epidurals. That is why most are encouraged to visit clinics beforehand and learn as much as possible about their offers and philosophies.

Generally speaking, you can decide which place you are giving birth in. You can chose between home birth, birth house, clinic birth and hospital birth. Each with different degrees of medicine versus "alternative" stuff.

By month 6 you should start visiting the ones nearer you. They usually have a presentation day where they try to convince you their place is the best, and show you all they can offer. That includes which kind of anesthesia they have available and when and how they apply it.

Here are some samples near Zürich:

All the places I visited had epidurals available. I have, however, kept away from the more "natural" and "alternative" places.

Re: A good clinic using Epidural during labor

Epidural is the way of administering the drug, and has nothing to do with the type of drug(s) that you will have pumped into your body. You might as well say intravenous or oral.Check out what drugs they are planning on giving you. The less the better unless you are planning a Caesarian section
