Re: Dentists abroad. Anybody ever used and can recommend one outside of Switzerland

I went to the dentist at Zurich airport for a check up and clean last summer. Think it was about 120chf.

But she told me I needed 4 fillings........... i've never had a filling in my life

Anyway it was going to be about 1500chf and i was going back to England for 3 weeks the week after so made an appointment in the UK to get it sorted.

My dentist in the UK said I didn't need any, 2 were deformations of the enamel that had always been there and didn't have any decay the other 2 were tiny cavities that he would have to remove half my tooth to get to so he wasn't going to touch them. He said he could if he wanted to make money but it wasn't the right thing to do.

So now I go to the dentist once a year in the UK, wouldn't consider going here unless it is an emergency. (and even then I might get a last kinute flight home)

Re: Dentists abroad. Anybody ever used and can recommend one outside of Switzerland

I forgot to mention 2 details about costs of the trip to Budapest.
  • The Airport is far from the city, so count on paying 20 EUR for a taxi to the city and another 20 to come back, there are shuttles that would take you for 12 EUR, and probably you could also go by train.
  • The bike rental is 3000 HUF per day or 20 CHF, I could negotiate it for 10 EUR per day ( 15 CHF ) when you rented the bike for 3 days. Otherwise you have the full day abo for all trains and buses for 1550 HUF ( 10 CHF ) or the 3 day tourist pass for 3400 HUF ( 24 CHF ). With this pass you could go with the metro to the station near the airport, but I didn't do it so I can't tell, maybe somebody here knows about this and so you could save the 20 EUR the taxis charge.

I can only suggest never to use a dentist in France. They have a horrible reputation and my own experience has been abysmal.
That's a bit of an over-generalisation! I think experiences depend on the dentist, rather than the country they work in... I have a major fear of dentists due to a horrible experience as a child (in Africa), and had both positive and negative experiences in the US and in Europe. I've now found a great dentist in France (not on the Swiss border though) who does follow-ups for free, will see me on short notice when I'm in the area, and most importantly, doesn't hurt!

Re: Dentists abroad. Anybody ever used and can recommend one outside of Switzerland

I got some work done in Budapest at the beginning of the month and was extremely happy with the work, the price, the dentist, the accomodation , well just about everything really. Except that I couldn't eat for the whole time, but apart from that, extemely happy.
I got an extraction, a root canal, one tooth was save from a root canal, and one tooth had to have the side, which had broken off in an accident, repaired. Plus 5 or 6 fillings, plus 3 or 4 x-rays, plus some sort of sand-blasting sanitation treatment, all for the bargain price of 750Chf-.
I will never give any money to a dentist working in Switzerland again.

Blimey that's cheap!! I am holding off on getting 2 fillings done at the moment (they are small ones!) and have been quoted about 700CHF - might look into a weekend break in Budapest soon

Re: Dentists abroad. Anybody ever used and can recommend one outside of Switzerland

I know!!!! I'm gonna go back and get an implant for 340 euro, or I could push the envelope and go for a "Swiss" implant for 960. In other counties, to justify something costing more than double the normal price, they just add the word Swiss to it.

Dentistry is very akin to robbery in most countries you will find.

It's just a chain - I think Ireland and Switzerland rank amongst the most abusive.

You can be sure that you Hungarian friends are gouging their own local market.

Re: Dentists abroad. Anybody ever used and can recommend one outside of Switzerland

The few people I could communicate with were very surprised to hear that I'd come for the cheap dentist. It made me wonder where they go to find a cheaper dentist..... Probably the neighbours garage...... "I fix your teeth, very cheap".

Re: Dentists abroad. Anybody ever used and can recommend one outside of Switzerland

You can go to India and have incredibly qualified and professional service for a fraction of the cost in Eastern Europe for example.

I remember in 2004 I was down in Buenos Aires eating as many steaks as I could find and the hostels were full of Yanks having their teeth fixed by dental professors.

I'm pretty good friends with a couple of doctors in Munich - the basic rule is - if there's pain involved people will pay - so dentists and orthopedic surgeons are amongst the best paid health professionals.

The only small defence I have for dentists' charges - my brother being one with a small practice in Malaysia - is the high cost of equipment.

Well, perhaps some of the equipment is made in CH?

Re: Dentists abroad. Anybody ever used and can recommend one outside of Switzerland

for years and years now Yanks have been going to Poland (was born there and left when I was 15 for US)to get their dental and medical procedures done. Wheteher it is Warsaw, Krakow or Wroclaw you will get top notch services for fraction of the cost and all while enjoying world class accomodations and great cuisine.

I'm heading to Wroclaw myself in a month or so. There are places that specialize in work for foreigners. Staff speaks several languages and they will even arrange tours for you.

Someone I know needed major dental work(EUR10k worth) in France and had an estimate done for about 4-5k in Poland. That included hotel but not travel.

Re: Dentists abroad. Anybody ever used and can recommend one outside of Switzerland

Any ideas for a dentist's surgery just over the border into France or Germany? I just need a simple drilling and filling and b***ered if I'm going to line some b***ers pockets here for it.

I went to the same dentist too. Highly recommended. It is a small private run clinic, no state of art building, but that's exactly what I want. (Big clinics tend to toss you around).

I'll go back soon to get my implants too.

Re: Dentists abroad. Anybody ever used and can recommend one outside of Switzerland

Just over a week ago, something very weird started happening to one of the teeth that had received treatment in Budapest. This tooth had recieved a root canal, done in Australia about 12 (stop kidding yourself), 15 years ago, which had previously been no problem but alot of the tooth had since then, broken away. After an ex-ray, the dentist told me that the root canal had not been properly done and that she suggest she re-bore it and try to do a better job. Once she was inside the root she realised that the reason that the filling didn't reach the end was because the root kinked at the tip, so access was imposible. Anywho, she sealed it all up then did the prep for the crown that I had originally planed for the tooth.
All good, until it wasn't. This weird feeling slowly developed into excruciating pain. I went to the emergency dept in the Dental Hospital, where they tapped on my tooth and took an ex-ray, (the most I would allow them to do with my mouth) which revealed an infection in the root. I got some pain killers and anti-biotics and left to book my ticket back to Budapest.
I, in no way hold the dentist in Budapest responsible, regardless of the fact that she was "touching it last", or even that her work probably did aggravate the tooth and cause it to flare up. She had a good, honest try at a pre-existing condition, that would have eventually happened. And anyway, the tooth was well and truely fecked when she saw it.
My new plan was to go back, get them to just rip it out and do the prep-work for an implant, basta. Oh, and I wanted another implant started as well so figured whilst in Budapest, killing two birds with one stone....
Once there, and in the hands of her more internationally experienced, implant qualified brother, he explained to me that the site of this tooth was in an area which is not the most receptable to implants, something to do with bone density or somethin. His suggestion was an operation to cut the tip of the root down so that there was no more air pocket for bacteria to live. This unfortunately involves having a "window" bored out of your cheek-bone in order to get to the offending root. But not to worry, he says, the bone should only be paper thin, he says. Mine was 5mm. , was about the order of things.
That day, I had this operation and an implant implanted, all for the price of 688euros. Went back to the apartment, and watched movies for 48 hours holding a bag of frozen peas to my face. Check-up, sight seeing then home again 4 days later!
There is no getting away from the fact that having holes bored into your head is boarderline torture, but I am so happy with the results that it almost made it fun. The implant was (post-op) pain free and is healing beautifully, I almost forget it's been done. I had much more problems when I had an implant in Swtzerland. And the operation, while more painful post-op, is also healing nicely. I'm so glad I didn't have it taken out.
It's difficult to get me to actually endorse something, but taking into account the work I've had done, getting quite extensive by now, I think they are great.
