Being serious, I know a couple here who couldn't get pregnant.

The husband's sperm was really low quality and he was told by the doctor to improve his health.

He chain-smoked, drank too much, ate unhealthily and never ever took any exercise.

Not sure why he ever thought he would have healthy sperm if they were a reflection of his own health.
I was reading an article on the Internet that said scientists had discovered there were links between oral hygiene and testicular hygiene. The same strands of bacteria were found to inhabit both regions and that men who took measures to improve their dental hygiene were found to simulataneously see improved sperm quality.

Maybe this is why most supermarkets place toothpaste and condoms on the same aisle.

The simpler explanation would be that when single men go to the supermarket they are looking for both items?

Re: Sperm quality check

Just to re-emphasize, get a referral from your Dr. or a pre-authorization from your insurance. The care of you wife in in the context of fertility, triggering you to have a sperm Quality test is not linked to your individual care right? its not like your wifes Dr./insurance communicate with each other. The risk is that then the insurance will have an issue re-imbursing as it was not part of care by your GP or pre-notice and that's really for most insurances, unless you have some form of Uber insurance Status.

As was my experience - and we have beyond Basic.

and my other Piece of advice: BRING YOUR OWN PORN or your wife..OMG, the porn there can be like 1970's or so comical that it kinda defeats the Intention good luck.

Hello,

Do you know where I can do sperm quality check in Zurich or around? What is the price of this kind of test?

Thank you in advance.
" Kosten Spermiogramm
As you live in Zurich, I hope you understand it: Basically: See you're family-doctor = where ever he sends you it's paid by health-insurance.

Re: Sperm quality check

I had a sperm check done at the end of October - just came back from holidays and found my Christmas gift: the bill (actually two of them). The total cost is insane: a bit more than 1400 CHF. I can't believe it. The doctor is this one: http://www.derkinderwunsch.ch/. Someone posted a review in google describing the same issue...

I will send the bills to my Krankenkasse tomorrow, but I am not sure they will pay for it because my deductible is 2500 CHF. I got a referral from my GP at least...

Has anyone had this sort of bill for such a "simple" check?

Have you ever challenged a doctor bill (and got anything out it!)? I find the invoice too complicated - way too many small items, which I struggle to understand...

Unless you have other bills adding up to more than 2500, no, they won't.

Seems a lot though, I recall it being 10x less (had to do a few after my vasectomy to get the 'all clear').

1400chf? I don't see how that can be possible... it costs 288chf at the Universitätspital Zurich Klinik für Reproduktions-Endokrinologie
and all you need is a referral from your doctor. http://www.repro-endo.usz.ch/Seiten/default.aspx

Maybe the "extraction-process" was much...nicer.

Re: Sperm quality check

Thanks for the useful answers, @Tom and @Richdog.

It is clear that my insurance won't cover the cost - haven't had any other bill in 2016. I will check with the doctors and hopefully they can explain it. I was expecting something around the 300 CHF you mentioned, but that's the magic in Switzerland - prices are always much more than one can expect!

I went to the clinic twice: first time to "leave the sample", second time to discuss results. As everything was fine, the second visit lasted only 5
minutes

Don't you check or enquire about prices before you do something instead of simply doing it blindly and then hoping for the best? It takes only a few moments of your time to ask for that information.

I would be interested to see their breakdown of this 1400chf bill, because if it is over 4x the price of the university hospital clinic then there must be something else to it.

It is clearly a lesson that I have learned after this experience.I always ask about final prices and then expect a 10%/20% Swiss extra on top, but in this case I thought it was a sort of standard medical cost and I didn't ask at all. In every website and forum I checked beforehand, the estimated cost was between 150 and 300 CHF.

I guess there is a standard check that costs around 300 CHF and then the doctor can include whatever additional test he finds appropriate. Will check with them. Thanks again for your reply.

Re: Sperm quality check

in the meantime I got mine done - I'm writing out of my head but if I'm not mistaken the doctor visit was around 200 CHF + blood test and the sperm test was around 300-350 CHF.

I will send those bills to my insurance so don't know if they will cover it...

Thanks for sharing that info. Glad that you had both tests done for such a reasonable price.

Just out of interest, what was the doctors visit and the blood test for? Why did you need that for the sperm test?
