How do you know you're healthy if you havent seen a doctor in 15 years. That and your prejudices seems ignorant to me
By the same logic, how do you know that you have toxins which badly need to (and can) be removed by cupping? Because you've had relief from something or other after cupping in the past? Ever heard of "post hoc ergo propter hoc"?

Thats my point exactly, 'scientists' say acupuncture doesnt work and yet millions use this to heal themselves.
Groaned for your ignorance. Can't stand bad science.

Re: Cupping

The person I know who uses this method uses it mostly as a massage technique. You still get the lovely red circles everywhere, but she also uses light suction to lift, stretch and relax the muscles. She believes it's a better alternative to pressure on the muscles.

And anyone who eschews the use of critical thought, rationality, or the scientific method as we know it since it's beginnings in the enlightenment seems willfully, even dangerously, ignorant to me. But I am beginning to suspect that you won't understand that either. Perhaps we use the word "understand" in different ways.

It's quite amusing how you lot are trying very hard to discredit a thousand year old documented form of medicine

You haven't the slightest idea. Dawkins is a different person. I don't agree with everything he writes. If you wish to get personal, I find you to be naive, but that is neither here, nor there.

I don't know about loz, but I am a scientist and I have to admit, I did resort to acupuncture about 13-14 years ago. I'd had severe headaches and vomiting for a week, nothing showed up on the microbiology or CT scan and painkillers proved ineffective. As a last resort, my wife persuaded me to let one of her catholic friends pray over me and visit an acupuncturist. It resolved a few days later and I could easily have claimed the prayer or the acupuncture "cured" me. However, on a more rational basis, it was probably an undiagnosed mild encephallitis of some sort and as such self-limiting and probably on the way out by the time of the "alternative" interventions.
That is the problem with alternative therapies; people turn to them as a last resort, unaware that the condition is approaching its conclusion and hail the last treatment they received as the "cure".
It's akin to finding a lost object and declaring "it's always in the last place you look".

That after about 3500 clinical trials its efficacy has never been proven.

Now what do you know about "scientists"?

You got personal by basically calling me naive and saying i lack critical thought. I envy your certainty and your sense of being right which i hope makes you happy, healthy and kind to others.

You do apparently lack the capacity for critical thought. Spare me your good thoughts, please. On the one hand you will need them for the placebo effect of quack science to help you, and on the other, I manage to get by pretty well by regarding the world as a place which is ruled by causality, and can be discovered and understood with the exercise of the mind.

As a matter of fact, I am grateful when someone points out an error in my reasoning.

If you dislike my input, put me on your ignore list.

Re: Cupping

I would like to chime in, that many of these methods do seem to work through the placebo effect. The placebo effect is indeed a relatively accepted scientific method and used extensively.
Other's mentioned that the body is a wonderful machine at taking care of itself (or something to that effect), if one of these alternative methods is sufficient to trigger the placebo effect in an individual mind that has positive outcomes---go nuts with it!

One of the top Hockey Goalies of all time would skate backwards towards the net before turning around at the last second—an act he believed made the goal shrink. Absolutely bat shit crazy, but if that's what his mind needed for optimal performance, I'm not going tell him he's breaking the laws of thermodynamics :P

To be fair, that's true. The original question was pretty reasonable and benign.

There are ways and means of disagreeing with the OP (I don't really believe in alternative medicine either) but it's all gone a bit mob-mentality.
