Looking for an English speaking dental hygenist [Zurich]

Morning all,

Just wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a reasonably priced (if that is possible here!) English speaking hygenist in Zurich, or surrounding area?

Thanks would really appreciate it as teeth could do with a polish!

Dr. Terry McDermott
Klosbachstrasse 123
8032 Zurich
Tel: (01) 252-4452

One of the dental hygenists at the practice, Christine, is an American; you can get by in English with most of the others.

Cleaning usually costs me around CHF 180.

I still remember that goal Terry scored against Spurs in the FA Cup many years ago.

So I'd have to recommend him

I highly recommend the following link, you can then change the language to English and all the details of dentists are shown. It would be good to call them and ask what are there approx. charges are.

Re: Looking for an English speaking dental hygenist [Zurich]

First, always ask if the person to clean you teeth is a REAL DH (dental hygienist) because some dentists will cheat and turn the job over to a PA (dental assistants with short training to clean teeth above the gumline...not a true cleaning and not helpful against periodontal disease...good for pocketbook of dentist)

Second, Swiss dentists use a tariff system to charge their patients, based upon a point system. (from about 3.10 to 5.00...higher equals more money per point) Hygienists charge per 5 minutes of their time, HOWEVER they can add on charges for oral hygiene instructions, periodontal charting, fluoride treatments, fluoride varnishes, desensitization, x-rays, examinations, etc, SO it is sometimes difficult to know the final bill. In ZURICH, they generally range between 150-200 per hour, without x-rays or doctor's exam.

Third, if you only want to see a DH, you must ask if that is possible, as it is customary to see the dentist as well, which can drive up the costs. Depends upon your needs, as not all patients need to see the dentist each time, while those who are very cavity prone should...A general rule of thumb is a dentist exam every 1-2 years, and a DH each 6 months, depending upon your oral health.

Fourth, if you only want a cleaning, or if your dentist is abroad, you may want to see an independent DH. We work alone, without any affiliation to any dentist, which can also be an advantage, when asking for advice, as well as price.

Hope this answers your question.
Susan

Re: Looking for an English speaking dental hygenist [Zurich]

We've used Dr. Hans-Peter Gschäll in Meilen.

He's absolutely rigorous and professional in the work that he *does* execute -> therefore, I assume his in-house hygienist is the same (I didn't go there yet )

I suspect that he's doesn't offer the lowest rates/costs in CH.

[I spent several hours in his chair having old UK NHS amalgams replaced]

I was wondering if traveling to eastern Europe countries for some dental work is worthy. Anybody tried this?

Re: Looking for an English speaking dental hygenist [Zurich]

From my working experience in 5 countries, I can confirm there are "good" and "less good" dentists in every country. However, some countries do have a more rigorous training, which leads one to believe the average dentist is better.....and is generally the truth.

The idea to go to a different country for treatment is very tempting, and sometimes not a bad idea. Since there are so many German dentists in Switzerland there is nothing wrong with crossing the border. (if you have time) HOWEVER; please be careful the dental tourism from some countries, as I have seen some very sad results. I have actually shed tears with patients who thought they had found a better deal, only to discover their teeth were damaged beyond repair. Like the guy, who went back to XXXXX, and later discovered the extraction of his tooth was not complete and the remaining root was exuding pus from beneath the newly placed bridge....YUCK and OUCH! Or the woman, whose full mouth of new crowns were hiding the open margins beneath her gums, causing periodontal disease. In her case, it would be impossible to repair the problem.

Sorry, I don't mean to scare you. There are many wonderful professionals out there. It is only to mention the professional training is not the same in all countries...
