Activities for under fives in Basel area

Hi,

I moved to the Basel area with my family about one month ago from the UK and would like some help to find some club or sport type activities for my children.

We live about 20mins from the centre of Basel in a village near Dornach. Our daughter is four years old and will start playgroup in the village for one morning a week, we are concerned that this will not be enough to keep her entertained and will not allow her to make many friends. So we would like to find some other activities that will allow her to interact with other children and if it gives her the opportunity to help learn the language that would be great. In the UK she enjoyed going to dancing lessons but any group based activity would be perfect.

My son will be two in September, so is to young for for sport at the moment but if there are any links to Mother and Toddlers clubs that people could post they would be gratefully received.

I hope someone can give us some suggestions.
Many thanks!

Re: Activities for under fives in Basel area

Just to let you know if you contact Basel Childbirth Trust and Centrepoint they run small mother and toddler groups etc and can maybe get to know other activities around the area. Also Gymboree give music groups to young children, and at Centrepoint they run a book/story group. By contacting or visitng any of these groups you will find out other resources useful to you.. I also know that in Dornach they have a local notice board not far from the Gemeinde, anyway please feel free to pm me and welcome to Dornach

Re: Activities for under fives in Basel area

Hello! Our family will be moving to the area soon. I have two daughters, one almost 3 year old and one 7 month old. We were just there looking around and loved Dornach and Gempen. (if we move there, I'd love to visit the play group!) Can you tell me more about what it is like to live there? How long have you been there? Are you home with your children? If so, what do you do during the day?

Thanks!

Re: Activities for under fives in Basel area

The best bet would be to go to your Gemeinde. In my village we have 'Mukiturnen' which is a really fun gym session for pre-kindergarten children. Every fortnight there is also a muttertreff (coffee morning) & I'm sure Dornach will have these & more besides. If you are planning to integrate, then I'm sure that by plunging yourself in the deep end and going along to all things local you will soon find you will have too much to do!!
Gymboree is great but on the expensive side, especially with two. My little girl also goes to ballet once a week in Oberwil.
Have you joined the BCT? They have local coffee mornings as well as weekly groups in the centre of basel.

I have a little girl (nearly 4) & a two year old boy. You are always welcome to PM if you would like to arrange a playdate as I remember how hard it is in the beginning. We live about 10 mins from you.

Re: Activities for under fives in Basel area

Forgot to say that my son was too little initially for Mukiturnen so I hired a babysitter who came in with me & played ball games with him, whilst I was able to concentrate on my little girl.

Re: Activities for under fives in Basel area

Hi, we have lived in a village called Hochwald, next to Gempen for 5 months, I am at home with the children. We are trying to integrate as much as we can with the local community and go to the village mum's & toddlers group one morning, a private kindergarten for two mornings, and the village playgroup one morning. We also go on lots of walks in the hills around us, and I just invited a group of local mums for a coffee morning which we are now going to do every two weeks.

Gempen & Hochwald are beutiful places to live and the Swiss people we have met here are are very friendly and accepting. You also get more house for your money here than in Basel Land, but the tax in Solothurn is higher. The only downside is that you will be on a hill that is not on the tram or train network (there is a bus), so means that you will have to get in your car to go anywhere plus if you make friends in the expat community they may not be willing to travel up the hill?

I hope this helps,
