Kindergarten kids play in the rain?

Do all the kindergartens in Switzerland send the kids outside to play regardless of the weather? Last year my 5 year old had his first year of kindergarten, and we were suprised when it was raining, he came home soaking wet because the teacher sends the kids out to play in the rain (while she sits in the classroom, or takes an umbrella outside for herself .)

I grew up in the US (and my wife in Ukraine) and neither of us can recall being sent outside to play in the rain as school kids (Altho I asked some of my Indonesian colleagues, and they say that they did play in the rain, so I guess this is something that varies by culture?) I looked in the literature given by the school this year, and it does say to dress your kids in rain-gear for bad weather as they will play outside regardless of weather...(I guess I missed that part last year )

What is the reason for this? To "toughen-up" the kids? I think playing in the rain (especially in November when it's cold out) would only tend to make the kids sick I don't see any adults sitting outside at the cafes on a rainy day, why should kids be different? Does anyone have any insight to why the schools here do this?

Re: Kindergarten kids play in the rain?

There is never bad weather, just inapproriate clothing. Our children are happy to play in the rain, but we make sure that they have waterproofs. Probably if you look in the school handbook, you have to provide your child with appropriate clothing.

Re: Kindergarten kids play in the rain?

I had a conversation with a German guy in our local playground around April time. It was chilly and absolutely peeing with rain and he and I were the only people around with our kids.

Kids go mental if they are locked up inside all day and need to run about to get rid of the energy (my 18 month old son was driving me bonkers so that was my decision to take him out). We've bought good wet weather gear (wellies, rain trousers, waterproof jacket) and he can splash around in puddles to his heart's content.

Didriksons seems to be a good make and is available in outdoor shops here.

Me and the German guy concluded that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.

I would buy your kids good wet weather gear with a warm jumper underneath and don't worry about them going out in the rain - they'll not rust.

Re: Kindergarten kids play in the rain?

When my daughter was in KG she never played outside in the rain, but every Thursday they went to the forest for the day regardless of the weather, it could of snowed, rained, or be really nice it did not matter. I had to always give a spare set off clothes in her rucksack in case she fell in the stream which whenever she did the teacher never changed her clothes she always came home wet

If i was you i would have a chat to the teacher, and ask why she sends the children outside to play in the rain when your child does not have rain clothes on, i hope your child was not sick from playing outside.

Re: Kindergarten kids play in the rain?

Growing up in Scotland, we were out to play in all weathers everyday, I didn't do us any harm and doesn't make children sick either! On the contrary, fresh air and exercise (daily) is exactly what children need to grow and develop their bodies normally.

Nowadays in the UK it's a different story, the kids are not allowed out in rain or snow, instead they're like caged animals, wrapped up in cotton wool. I feel really sorry for kids who are not allowed out to play, for whatever the reason! So well done Switzerland for not going crazy and letting kids have a normal childhood.

Adults don't sit outside in cafés on a rainy day - nor do most children 'sit' outside on a rainy day. As long as they have proper clothing on, why should they not go outside and use some of their boundless energy?
Odd really, we pay large sums of money for winter holidays and ski-lift passes so that the children can go skiing or snowboarding in near zero temperatures but don't want them to play outside in the November chill.

Re: Kindergarten kids play in the rain?

I have no problem sending my kids out to play in the rain as long as they are dressed appropriatley. My parents always took us out whatever the weather as we had dogs to walk.

I thought that getting wet makes you sick is a bit of an old wives tale. Colds & Flu's are caused by viruses not by cold or rain.

Oh, that's so great to read that someone else (and colomka) holds the same view as me. In my last job I constantly had to fight with my office colleague who would never open the window in case she got cold and caught 'flu!

I'm convinced that the fact we were in a constantly stuffy office was the reason we were all as sick as often as we were.

Fresh air is the tonic - even if it is peeing down!

Sandgrounder, there is an actual condition called "sick building syndrome". Some offices (and schools) are notorious for not having a healthy internal atmosphere, and im not talking of the office politics!

Me to i send my kids out in the rain, snow, and sunshine, but only with the right sort of clothes on i had dogs back in England, and went walking in all sorts of weather so it healthy for children to play outside, but the OP said the teacher sent them outside in the rain without the proper clothes.

P.S I have a very bad cold from wearing summer clothes in zurich on sunday

Re: Kindergarten kids play in the rain?

Most people in an office are sick in the winter because the windows are closed allowing one sick person's germs to spread around with no interference from fresh air, etc.

Viruses make you ill, not the weather. If the kids are dressed appropriately they'll be fine.

Or, you could have touched something that someone with a cold had already touched (door handle, tram seat, etc.), wiped your eye or licked your finger then because your body was using more resources to keep you warm on a cool day in your summer dress it didn't have the resources to keep your immune system primed and you developed the cold.

Colds don't happen spontaneously, they need a virus to be present first.

Indirectly, being cold could trigger a cold but not if you have had no contact with a virus first.

Bloody Nora, if we didn't play out in the rain when we were growing up I'd have spent three quarters of my life in doors! The North West of England is a very rainy place.

...and games like puddle-jumping, mud-pie making, skiddy competitions on the bike and building shelters out of old bits of tarp and rope would never have taken place.

We didn't have Goretex in them days, either - it was a pair of wellies and a caghoule or a plazzy mac.

One of our playmates wasn't allowed to play in the rain and had to watch from his bedroom window.

Yes, forgot to say "Get well soon!" However you catch a cold it doesn't make it any nicer or easier to suffer, does it...

I grew up in Seattle. My dad still says that if kids in Seattle went inside every time it rained, they would never go outside.

When I was in preschool, not only would we go play outside while it was raining, we would float our umbrellas in the storm overrun. The days are short enough in winter, why stay inside just because of a little liquid sunshine?
