Múinteoir Gaeilge - Teacher of Irish

Tá múinteoir gaeilge ag teastail uaim! Tá m'inionacha i ngaelscoileanna ag an am seo agus táimid ag bogadh go CH (Nyon/Geneva sa bhliain nua). Ba bhreá liom go gcóimeadfaimíd í. Cabhair éinne?

I'm looking for an Irish teacher in the Nyon/Geneva area. Is there anyone that can help?? My children are currently in a Gaelscoil (irish medium primary school) and I want to keep their Irish up.

Re: Múinteoir Gaeilge - Teacher of Irish

Is é an trua nach i Zürich a bheidh bhur dtriall! Ní múinteoir gairmiúil mé - iarchéimí matamaitice atá ionam - ach bheinn breá sásta comhrá agus céachtanna a choinneáil leo. Insint an fhírinne, is mór an taitneamh a bhainfinn féin as sin - tá mise ag síothlú leis an uaigneas teangan anseo.

Éist, mura n-aimsíonn tú duine in aice le Geneva féin, inis dom agus táim cinnte go bhféadfaimis teacht ar réiteach éigin. (Cé mhéid acu agus cén aois atá siad, dála an scéil?)

What a shame you aren't coming to Zürich! I'm not a professional Irish teacher but I'd dearly love to help them. I'm dying of linguistic loneliness up here.

If you don't find anyone in/around Geneva, let me know and I'm sure we can figure something out. (Oh, and by the way, how many and how old?)

Tá ceathrar 10,8,6 agus 2 agus mé fhéin cinnte. Níl morán gaeilge ag an báibín go foill
Bhí mé ag smaoineamh ar au pair ón gaeltacht....Tá cúpla mhí fágtha agam ar aon nós. Ansin beidh gaeltachtín bheaga againn sa ceantar Nyon! Beidh tú lán fáilte cuairt a thabhairt dúinn, gaeltacht riail a haon atá i gceist!

Four: 10, 8, 6 & 2 and me! I was thinking of an au pair from the gaeltacht.

Re: Múinteoir Gaeilge - Teacher of Irish

Á, tuigim. Bhuel, mura mbeadh rud eile ar mo chúram (agus dá mb'as an nGaeltacht dom) bheadh cathú láidir orm cur isteach ar a leithéid de phost. Caithfidh mé a bheith sásta le cuairt a thabhairt ar Ghaeltacht Nyon nuair a bheas sí bunaithe agaibh. Go raibh míle maith agat as an gcuireadh cineálta, agus go n-éirí libh san Eilvéis!

Ah, I see. If I didn't have a dissertation to write.... Oh well, I'll have to content myself with paying a visit to the Nyon Gaeltacht once you get it set up. Best of luck with the move!

Hey Mathnut, why the big interest in Irish? I would love to have someone to improve my Irish with but well, am still in Ireland at the mo and no-one I know speaks Irish here.

Will have to join a wee conversation group.

So tell me, how do know how to speak our lovely language?

Well, I guess originally it was the intriguing orthography - but that's a little like saying you love your wife because she has brown hair, isn't it? Several years later and you'd expect there's a little more to it than that...

If you're looking for Irish in Dublin there's a good conversation circle that meets Fridays in Connolly Books. Tá aithne agam ar dhuine nó beirt acu sin... tell 'em 'Abigail san Eilvéis' sent you!

My understanding is that the orthography was imported by monks from the court of Charlemagne - ogham (which actually is Unicoded) not really lending itself to pen and paper.

Cheers Mathnut, I may just do that.

At HTD, I just saw your profile picture. The Stags Head is a good spot, was trying to direct a visiting american student there recently... I was telling her to look for a picture on the ground, pretty much the one you have on your profile!

My goodness... this is why I have recurring nightmares about having to study for my Irish leaving Cert exam still... many years after having scraped a pass...
My little boy might one day spend his holidays in the Nyon gaelteacht...

Beidh lán fáilte air! He'll be very welcome!

Don't blame the language for the bad teaching/curriculum/Peig etc... It's a beautiful language and there are lots of lovely cds & books for kids available - Cló Iar-Chonnachta (?sp?) is one publisher, An Gúm, Áis...... Not like the fuzzy material with the Séan and Máire shapes stuck on with sandpaper, ah remember the days!!!

Or should that be lán fáilte roimhe? Grammar was never my strong suit!

Peig
I was told that Peig actually had an affair with some islander (whilst married) and that it was in her book - I bet some old bag of a nun edited it out. I know some Sister savaged the spicier (if there is such a thing) elements out of our Shakespeare.

No way!! Now that I would have read with or without translation!! Peig is the only book I know that was more valuable second hand - because some other poor sod had taken the trouble to squeeze the translation above the text!!

The lengths they went to! One girl in my class got detention for whistling, it wasn't even in the rules, whatever warped planet this Sister came from it meant something?? Welcoming in the devil or some such nonsense.

Re: Múinteoir Gaeilge - Teacher of Irish

But when you had to do your revision you found the translation illegible, and the rushed scrawl had obliterated the original text too.
Girls weren't meant to whistle... and those that did already had the devil in them.
